Chapter 4 - THE SIEGE OF ASHFORD MANOR

The power grid across the fifty-acre estate died instantly as the second explosive charge detonated at the main transformer station near the edge of the woods.

Smoke rolled across the manicured lawns, thick and dark, smelling of sulfur and burnt rubber.

Inside the basement medical suite, the amber emergency lights cast long, ominous shadows against the steel walls.

"Dad!" Leo cried out, springing from his hospital bed and rushing to Daniel’s side. He grabbed his father's waist, his newly restored vision registering the dark, terrifying red glow of the alarm lights.

"I’ve got you, son," Daniel said, lifting Leo into his arms. He turned to Rosa Alvarez, who had shielded Maya with her own body. "Rosa! Get up. We are moving now."

Rosa’s face was deathly pale, but her eyes held no confusion. She knew exactly what was happening. "It’s them... Vanguard found us."

"My security team is engaging them at the north perimeter," Marcus Vance said, checking his tactical radio monitor while handing a secondary sidearm to Daniel. "I have eight armed men on site. But whoever these guys are, they brought military-grade night-vision, suppressed automatic rifles, and thermal optics. They came to kill everyone in this building."

"Where’s the safest place?" Daniel asked, thumbing the safety off the pistol Marcus had handed him.

"The panic room beneath the master library," Marcus replied. "It’s constructed from twelve-inch reinforced ballistic steel, independent air scrubbers, and has a private hardwired communications line directly to the State Police commissioner."

"Then we move through the sub-basement tunnel," Daniel commanded. "Helen, you stay behind Rosa and Maya. Marcus, take the lead."

"Understood. Stay low, move fast," Marcus barked.

They burst out of the medical suite into the concrete sub-basement corridor.

Above them, the muted sounds of automatic gunfire echoed through the floorboards—sharp, rhythmic pop-pop-pops of suppressed submachine guns answered by the heavier boom of Marcus's security guards returning fire with shotguns and rifles. Glass shattered on the floor above; heavy boots stomped across the marble foyer.

"Clear!" Marcus hissed, stepping around a corner into the utility corridor beneath the estate's grand library.

Suddenly, a heavy steel door at the far end of the corridor blew inward with a deafening CRACK!

Flash-bang grenades bounced across the concrete floor.

BLINDING WHITE LIGHT! EAR-SPLITTING EXPLOSION!

The concussion wave threw Daniel against the wall. His ears rang with a high-pitched, screaming whine; his vision went completely white for three agony-filled seconds.

"Go! Go! Secure the target!" a harsh, synthesized voice barked through a gas mask.

Two mercenaries clad in pitch-black tactical body armor, holding short-barreled assault rifles with laser designators, swept into the hallway through the smoke.

Marcus reacted with terrifying speed. He dropped to one knee, firing three rapid shots: BANG! BANG! BANG!

The heavy 9mm rounds struck the first mercenary squarely in the center of his chest plate, driving him backward into his partner.

"Move!" Daniel screamed, grabbing Leo in his right arm and pulling Maya with his left hand as they scrambled toward a hidden reinforced doorway set into the concrete wall behind a high-voltage breaker panel.

Rosa slammed her shoulder against the emergency door release. The heavy steel door slid open with a hydraulic hiss.

"Inside! All of you, get inside!" Daniel shouted, pushing Helen, Rosa, and the two children into the pitch-black vault.

Before Daniel could step across the threshold himself, a heavy boot kicked him savagely in the side.

The blow cracked two of Daniel’s ribs—the exact same ribs he had broken in the car accident two years ago. Pain exploded in his chest like liquid fire, sending him sprawling across the slick concrete floor.

His gun clattered away into the shadows.

A tall mercenary stood over him, raising the butt of his assault rifle to smash Daniel’s skull.

"Dad!" Leo screamed from inside the doorway.

From inside the vault, nine-year-old Maya Alvarez looked at Daniel lying helpless on the floor. She saw the blood on his face. She saw the terrifying mercenary raising his weapon.

No, Maya thought. Not again. No more broken people.

Maya didn't run into the corner of the vault.

Instead, she darted out of the open doorway, dodging past her mother’s outstretched hand, and lunged directly at the mercenary.

"Maya, no!" Rosa shrieked.

Maya threw her bare hands forward, slamming both of her small palms directly onto the unshielded, exposed skin of the mercenary’s throat where his neck-gaiter had slipped down below his helmet.

CRACKLE!

A blinding, violet-colored arc of pure, raw bio-electrical energy erupted from Maya’s palms like a localized lightning strike.

The sound was like a high-voltage power transformer blowing out on a wooden pole.

The mercenary’s entire body went rigid instantly. His weapon dropped from his numb fingers, clattering onto the floor. The electronic HUD inside his tactical helmet short-circuited in a shower of tiny sparks, and his eyes rolled back into his head as three thousand volts of redirected nerve-energy surged through his muscular frame.

He collapsed backward like a felled oak tree, completely unconscious before his body hit the floor.

Maya stumbled backward, gasping for air, her lips turning a faint shade of blue, her small body shivering violently as if she had just been thrown into an ice bath.

Daniel didn't waste a single second. He grabbed the fallen mercenary’s rifle, hauled Maya into his arms, and threw himself backward through the heavy door of the panic room.

"Seal it!" Daniel roared.

Helen slammed the heavy manual locking wheel on the inside of the steel vault door.

CLANG-THUD!

Heavy locking bolts shot into the steel frame, sealing them inside the soundproof, bulletproof, impenetrable sanctuary deep beneath the earth.

Outside, the heavy thud of fists and tactical axes began slamming against the exterior steel plate, but the door didn't yield an inch.

Inside the dim, red-lit vault, Daniel collapsed against the wall, clutching his broken ribs, breathing heavily.

He set Maya down gently on a soft leather cot in the corner.

The little girl was breathing, but her skin was freezing cold, and tiny blue static sparks were still jumping faintly across the tips of her fingernails.

Leo ran over, sitting on the edge of the cot, gently grabbing Maya’s hand and holding it tight between his own warm palms.

"I’ve got you, Maya," Leo whispered softly, his clear blue eyes shining in the dim red emergency light. "I’ll keep you warm. I can see now... I’ll watch the dark for you."

Daniel looked at his son, then at the doctor, then at Rosa, who was weeping tears of relief as she held her daughter’s feet.

"Marcus," Daniel said into the vault’s hardwired wall-intercom system, his voice cold, steady, and filled with a dark, absolute promise. "Tell me the State Police are on their way."

"Two minutes out, Mr. Ashford," Marcus’s voice cracked through the speaker from his vantage point in the security hub upstairs. "And sir? State Police units just raided the harbor office. They caught Julian trying to board a private yacht bound for international waters. They have him in custody."

Daniel closed his eyes for three seconds, letting out a long, slow breath.

May you like

He reached out and gently laid his hand over his son’s hand, which was holding Maya’s.

"It’s over," Daniel whispered. "The dark is gone."
