Chapter 5 - THE CONFESSION IN THE CELL

The State Police Secure Holding Facility in Hartford was a sterile, windowless complex made of poured concrete and bulletproof glass.

Twenty-four hours had passed since the siege at Ashford Manor.

Outside, the national news media was in a state of absolute frenzy. Headlines blared across every major network and newspaper in the country:

ASHFORD MANOR UNDER ATTACK: BILLIONAIRE'S BROTHER ARRESTED IN FOUR-BILLION-DOLLAR PORT CONSPIRACY MIRACLE IN CONNECTICUT: LEO ASHFORD RECOVERS SIGHT AFTER TWO YEARS OF BLINDNESS

Inside room 104 of the interrogation wing, Julian Croft sat at a cold steel table. He was dressed in an orange inmate jumpsuit, his wrists handcuffed to an iron ring anchored into the concrete floor. His face was bruised, his expensive haircut ruined, his eyes bloodshot and sunken.

Sitting across from him behind the thick glass was Daniel Ashford.

Daniel looked immaculate. He wore a crisp dark grey suit, though beneath his shirt, his chest was tightly wrapped in medical bandages to support his cracked ribs. His gray eyes were entirely devoid of pity.

"You have five minutes, Julian," Daniel said through the internal intercom microphone. "The District Attorney is preparing a federal indictment for attempted murder, corporate espionage, and high treason. You are going to spend the rest of your natural life in a supermax prison in Colorado."

Julian let out a rasping, bitter laugh, shaking his head. "You think you won, don't you, Daniel? You think because you caught me and locked up a few mercenary goons that you're safe?"

"I know I’m safe," Daniel said calmly. "Because three hours ago, federal agents executed a simultaneous raid on the Manhattan headquarters of Vanguard North Asia. The flash drive you dropped on my floor contained every bank routing number, every encrypted email, and every hit-man wire transfer you ever processed with their board of directors."

Julian froze, the cynical smile fading entirely from his face. "What?"

"You kept receipts, Julian," Daniel said smoothly. "You were afraid Vanguard would betray you once I was dead, so you kept a full insurance file on their CEO, Arthur Vance-Sterling. The FBI seized their main servers at six o'clock this morning. Sterling is currently in handcuffs at JFK Airport trying to board a flight to Dubai."

Julian slumped back in his chair, the last remaining trace of defiance draining out of him like dirty water down a drain. "They... they were going to pay me forty million dollars, Daniel... forty million..."

"You sold your brother and your nephew for forty million dollars," Daniel said, his voice flat and unemotional. "You tried to leave an eight-year-old boy in permanent darkness so you could feel like a big man in a boardroom."

Julian looked up, his eyes wet with pathetic, self-pitying tears. "Is it true... what the guards are saying? The boy can really see?"

"Yes," Daniel said softly. "He sees everything now. He sees the sky, he sees the roses in the garden, and he sees you for exactly what you are."

"How?" Julian whispered, pressing his hands against his forehead. "The doctors said his nerves were dead! The scar tissue was absolute! How did he see my ring?!"

Daniel leaned close to the glass, his shadow falling over his imprisoned step-brother.

"Because there are things in this world, Julian, that cold, greedy men like you will never understand," Daniel said softly. "You thought darkness was a weapon you could use to trap us. But all it did was teach my son how to recognize the light when it finally came."

Daniel stood up, adjusting his suit jacket.

May you like

"Goodbye, Julian," Daniel said. "Do not write to us. Do not call us. As far as the Ashford family is concerned, you died in that river two years ago."

Daniel turned on his heel and walked out of the room, leaving Julian alone in the cold, white room, weeping silently into his handcuffed hands.
