Chapter 7 - The Battle for the Trust

Two weeks later.

The high-rise glass building of the New York State Supreme Court stood tall against the icy morning sky.

Reporters, television crews, and legal teams gathered on the wide marble steps outside. The news of the Vance family scandal had broken three days earlier, sending shockwaves through the corporate and social elite of the country.

Billionaire Reunited with Lost Triplets. Matriarch Victoria Vance Facing Charges of Conspiracy and Embezzlement.

Inside Courtroom 402, the air was thick with tension.

Victoria Vance sat at the defense table alongside three top-tier criminal defense attorneys. She was dressed in black silk, her expression sharp and defiant, refusing to acknowledge the crowd of spectators sitting behind the wooden railing.

Arthur sat at the plaintiff's table with David Sterling.

Sitting quietly in the second row of the gallery were Clara, Anne, and Sophie, dressed in matching navy wool coats and gray scarves, accompanied by Mrs. Higgins and Thomas.

Judge Margaret Lawson, a sharp-eyed woman in her sixties, slammed her gavel down on the wooden block.

"Court is now in session," Judge Lawson declared. "We are here to review the petition for permanent legal guardianship of Clara, Anne, and Sophie Vance, as well as the emergency motion to freeze the Vance Family Master Trust."

Victoria’s lead attorney, a man named Henderson, stood up immediately.

"Your Honor," Henderson began loudly. "My client, Mrs. Victoria Vance, acted entirely out of concern for the family estate six years ago. The children were raised in questionable conditions, and we contend that Arthur Vance's emotional state makes him unfit to manage both the three children and the multi-billion-dollar trust without board oversight."

"Unfit?" David Sterling stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, we submit into evidence Exhibit D: the complete financial forensic report showing that Victoria Vance transferred four million dollars from the family trust into private accounts held under Richard Green’s name to conceal the children's existence."

"That is an unproven allegation!" Henderson yelled.

"It is proven," Sterling replied calmly, pressing a button on his tablet. "We have the signed confession of Richard Green, executed yesterday evening at the State Penitentiary."

A murmur rippled through the courtroom.

Victoria turned her head sharply toward her attorney, her fists clenching so hard her fingernails bit into her palm.

Judge Lawson leaned forward over her desk, looking down at Victoria Vance with severe eyes.

"Mrs. Vance," Judge Lawson spoke slowly. "Did you, or did you not, authorize monthly payments to Richard Green while knowing your son's children were living in extreme poverty three miles from your estate?"

Victoria stood up, brushing her attorney's hand away from her arm.

"They were a threat to this family's legacy!" Victoria shouted, her composure finally shattering before the entire courtroom. "Elise Green was a waitress! She had no background, no lineage, no right to carry the Vance name! Arthur was meant to marry into European nobility! I protected this family's honor for thirty years!"

The courtroom went dead silent.

Judge Lawson shook her head with deep disgust.

"You didn't protect honor, Mrs. Vance," Judge Lawson said coldly. "You committed a monstrous crime against your own blood."

The judge raised her gavel.

"It is the order of this court that full, sole legal and physical custody of Clara, Anne, and Sophie Vance is granted immediately to Arthur Vance. Furthermore, Victoria Vance is hereby stripped of all trustee authority over the Vance Master Trust, effective immediately, pending her criminal trial for child endangerment and financial fraud."
