Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Broken Ground

Spring arrived three months later, melting the cold ice of winter and bringing fresh green grass back to the hills.

The sun shone brightly over Maple Crest Cemetery.

Where once stood a single, plain gray headstone surrounded by weeds, there now stood a beautiful white marble pavilion surrounded by rows of fresh blooming flowers—red roses, white lilies, and hundreds of vibrant yellow daisies.

In the center of the marble structure sat a new headstone carved from polished white granite:

ELISE MARION VANCE Beloved Wife, Mother, and Light of Our Lives 1989–2025 “Love never fails.”

A white stone bench sat beside the grave, shaded by the green leaves of a newly planted oak tree.

Arthur stood beside the bench, dressed in a simple navy suit. Beside him stood Clara, Anne, and Sophie.

The three girls were healthy, their cheeks rosy and full, their hair shining in the sunlight. They no longer wore faded thrift-store dresses or scuffed shoes. They wore neat white summer dresses and yellow cardigan sweaters, looking every bit the cherished daughters they were born to be.

Clara stepped forward, holding three yellow daisies in her hand. She laid them gently on the polished white stone.

"Hi, Mom," Clara whispered, a bright, beautiful smile on her face. "We came back."

Anne sat on the stone bench, pulling out a small leather sketchpad. She began to draw the flowers surrounding the pavilion, her pencils moving quickly across the paper. "Dad built a painting studio for me on the third floor, Mom. Just like you said I would have one day."

Sophie ran over to the side of the lawn, laughing as Major, a golden retriever Arthur had adopted for the girls two months ago, chased a yellow butterfly across the grass.

Arthur knelt down beside the stone, placing a single white rose next to Clara’s yellow daisies.

"I took care of everything, Elise," Arthur said softly, his voice full of peace. "They are safe. They are happy. And they will never know hunger or fear again."

A soft, warm breeze blew through the leaves of the oak tree, carrying the sweet scent of fresh grass and flowers.

It felt like a gentle hand brushing against his cheek.
