Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence as the recording ended. Hannah stood transfixed, tears spilling over her eyelashes. Naomi Chandler had known she was walking into a trap, yet she had courageously carried that hidden camera to expose the man who had tormented her behind closed doors.
"That’s it," Miller said softly, his jaw set like iron. "That’s full premeditated first-degree murder, conspiracy, and attempted murder of a minor."
He turned to his team. "Issue a statewide felony arrest warrant for Damon Chandler and Arthur Vance immediately. Alert SWAT and border patrol. I want every airport, train station, and highway on total lockdown."
"Frank!" A junior officer burst into the room. "Damon Chandler just arrived at the hospital lobby!"
Hannah’s head snapped up. "He’s here?"
"He brought his legal team, a private security detail, and three news crews," the officer reported. "He’s holding a live press conference in the main courtyard right now, claiming the hospital is illegally holding his daughter hostage!"
Miller pulled his weapon, checking the magazine. "He thinks he’s still in control of the narrative. He doesn't know we have the video."
"I'm coming with you," Hannah said firmly, wiping her tears away.
"Doc, it’s dangerous," Miller warned.
"I promised Naomi I wouldn't let him tell the story," Hannah said, her eyes burning with resolute strength. "I’m going to make sure he hears the truth."
Down in the spacious glass courtyard of St. Catherine’s Hospital, bright television lights blinded the darkness. Damon Chandler stood behind a wooden podium that Arthur Vance’s team had rushed in. Cameras were rolling, broadcasting live to tens of millions of viewers across the country.
Damon pulled a silk handkerchief from his breast pocket, dabbing at his eyes as he spoke into the cluster of microphones.
"My fellow Americans," Damon said, his voice cracking with orchestrated heartbreak. "Tonight, as I mourn the unspeakable loss of my beloved wife, Naomi, I am forced to endure a second nightmare. The administration of this hospital, driven by reckless rumors and sensationalism, is denying me access to my newborn baby girl, Clara..."
He paused, letting the emotion settle over the crowd of reporters, who were scribbling furiously in their notebooks.
"I ask only for privacy, for peace, and for the right to hold my daughter in my arms as we face an uncertain future together—"
"Liar!"
The voice cut through the courtyard like a lightning bolt.
The press corps turned in unison. Dr. Hannah Reese stepped through the glass automatic doors into the bright lights, flanked by Detective Miller and four armed state troopers.
Damon’s expression flickered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of pure hatred—before instantly smoothing back into grief.
"Dr. Reese," Damon said softly into the microphone, his tone patronizingly gentle. "I know you tried your best to save my wife. I don't blame you for the tragic outcome. You are under immense stress—"
"Save it, Damon," Hannah said, her voice echoing across the courtyard through the media loudspeakers. "Naomi didn't die from a random carjacking. She was shot beneath the stage at the Grand Marquis Ballroom at 9:14 PM tonight."
A collective gasp rippled through the gathered reporters. Flashbulbs began to erupt in rapid, blinding flashes.
Arthur Vance, standing near the edge of the podium, stepped forward quickly, pointing a finger at Hannah. "Security, remove this woman! She is violently unstable and violating HIPAA privacy laws!"
"Detective Miller," Hannah said calmly, holding up her smartphone, which was connected to the hospital’s outdoor public address system. "Play the file."
Miller pressed a key on his tablet.
Instantly, Damon’s own voice blasted out of the giant stadium-grade speakers mounted around the hospital courtyard, loud, clear, and terrifying:
"If the child survives, I’ll play the grieving single father. It’s a better story anyway."
The courtyard erupted into absolute pandemonium. Reporters began shouting questions at once. Cameras swung away from the podium to capture Damon’s face.
Damon froze. The color drained completely from his cheeks, leaving him looking like a ghost under the harsh studio lights. The carefully crafted mask of television charm shattered into millions of unrecoverable pieces.
"That... that's a fake," Damon stammered, stepping back from the microphones, his hands trembling violently. "That’s an AI generation! Arthur, tell them!"

He turned to look for Arthur Vance.
But Arthur was already running toward the glass exit doors, abandoning his client to save himself.
