Chapter 8 - Justice in the Dark

"Arthur Vance! Freeze!" Detective Miller yelled, sprinting after the fleeing publicist across the wet pavement of the courtyard.
Arthur sprinted through the sliding glass doors toward a black luxury sedan waiting at the curb with its engine idling. He leaped into the rear seat, screaming at his private driver, "GO! GO! DRIVE!"
The sedan accelerated away from the curb, its tires screeching against the wet asphalt. But as it sped toward the hospital gate, two heavy armored SWAT vehicles turned sharply into the entrance, blocking the exit entirely.
The sedan slammed on its brakes, skidding sideways across the slick pavement before crashing into a concrete light pole with a crunch of metal and shattering glass.
Officers swarmed the vehicle with drawn weapons. "OUT OF THE CAR! HANDS ON YOUR HEAD! NOW!"
Inside the courtyard, Damon Chandler stood trapped behind the podium, surrounded by a ring of flashbulbs and shouting reporters. He looked around wildly, searching for an escape route, but State Troopers were advancing on him from every side, their handguns unholstered.
"Damon Chandler," Detective Miller said, walking up to the podium and pulling heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for the murder of Naomi Chandler, attempted murder, and criminal conspiracy."
Damon looked at the handcuffs, then at the wall of news cameras capturing his every movement. The man who had lived his entire adult life in front of the lens was now trapped by it.
"You can't do this to me," Damon whispered, his voice devoid of all theatrics. "Do you know who I am? I control the media. I control the narrative!"
"Not anymore," Hannah said, walking up to him, looking him straight in his cold, empty eyes. "Naomi told the story. And the world just watched it."
Miller snapped the cuffs around Damon’s wrists, pulling his arms tightly behind his back. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."
As the officers led Damon away in tears—this time, real tears of defeat and terrifying realization—the press corps surged forward, shoving microphones toward Hannah.
"Dr. Reese! How is the baby?"
"Dr. Reese! Did Naomi know she was going to be killed?"
Hannah held up her hand, pausing before the sea of cameras. She looked down at the bloodstains still visible on her scrubs, then up at the dark sky above.
"Naomi Chandler was a brave woman who risked everything to protect her daughter and expose the truth," Hannah said into the microphones, her voice clear and resonant. "She did not die in vain. And her daughter will know exactly who her mother was—a true hero."
With that, Hannah turned her back on the media circus and walked back inside the hospital, heading straight toward the third floor.
When she reached the isolation room, the room was quiet. The soft, steady hum of the incubator was the only sound in the room.
Hannah walked over and looked inside. Baby Clara’s tiny eyes were open. She was breathing independently now, her vital signs stable, her heart beating strong and steady.

Hannah reached through the soft foam ports of the incubator and gently took Clara’s tiny, delicate hand. The baby’s small fingers curled tightly around Hannah’s index finger.
"You're safe now, Clara," Hannah whispered, tears flowing freely down her cheeks. "You're safe."
