Chapter 5 - The Hospital Bed Confession

The following afternoon, I drove to Greenwich Hospital in my black SUV. Hannah sat in the passenger seat, while Ruby sat in the back, holding her small backpack tightly.
Eleanor was resting in a private room on the fourth floor. Through the glass window, I saw an elderly woman with silver hair, her face pale against the white hospital pillows, an oxygen line resting beneath her nose.
When we stepped inside, Eleanor’s eyes slowly opened. She looked at Hannah, then at Ruby, and finally her eyes locked onto me.
A gasp escaped her dry lips. “Charles...” she whispered weakly.
“No, Eleanor,” I said softly, walking over to the side of her bed and taking a chair. “I’m Alexander. Charles’s son.”
Eleanor stared at my face, tears slowly welling in her tired eyes. “You look so much like him... but your eyes... your eyes are kind.”
Ruby ran over to the side of the bed, grabbing Eleanor’s hand. “Grandma! Look! Mr. Alexander bought me shoes! And we have Noah! He’s safe!”
Eleanor stroked Ruby’s hair with a trembling, frail hand. “My sweet girl... you found them... you brought our family back...”
She looked up at me, her chest heaving with weak breaths. “Alexander... I’m so sorry. Thirty-two years ago, I took your father’s money because I was terrified. He threatened to destroy my family if I ever spoke the truth. I let my daughter grow up without a father... and I let you grow up alone.”
“You don't need to apologize to me, Eleanor,” I said gently, leaning forward and placing my hand over hers. “My father was a cruel man. You did what you had to do to survive.”
“Madeline Cross came to my apartment two months ago,” Eleanor confessed, her voice dropping into a raspy whisper. “She had found old letters between your father and me in an archive. She threatened to have Ruby taken by social services if I didn't tell her about the secondary trust clause.”
My hands clenched into fists in my lap. Madeline hadn't just stolen my genetic material; she had terrorized an elderly woman and a helpless child to pull off her scheme.
“She told me that if a boy was born, she would take everything you owned,” Eleanor wept. “I was so scared... but then my sister Clara—Mrs. Collins—found out. Clara promised me she would save the baby and bring Ruby to safety.”
“It’s over now, Eleanor,” I assured her, my voice unwavering. “Madeline Cross is never going to hurt you or Ruby again. I’ve already arranged for the top medical specialists to handle your care. And when you are discharged, you are coming to live at my estate.”
Eleanor stared at me in shock. “Alexander... no... I can’t accept that... I’m just an old woman who kept a filthy secret—”
“You are my family,” I interrupted firmly. “Ruby is my niece. Noah is my son. This estate has been empty for too long. It’s time it became a home.”
Eleanor buried her face in her hands, sobbing with overwhelming relief. Ruby wrapped her small arms around her grandmother’s neck, smiling up at me with absolute, unconditional trust.

As I watched them, my phone vibrated in my pocket. A text message from my attorney, Marcus Vance:
“Alexander, we have a major problem. Madeline just leaked the story to the national media. Headlines are calling you an unfit billionaire holding an abducted child. The courtroom on Tuesday is going to be a bloodbath.”
