Chapter 6 - The Media Circus

By Monday morning, the serene iron gates of my Greenwich estate were besieged by dozens of news vans, satellite trucks, and swarms of shouting reporters.

Flashing news banners across major networks read: "Billionaire Recluse vs. Birth Mother: The Battle for the Stolen Mercer Heir."

Madeline had played her hand masterfully in the court of public opinion. She had given an exclusive television interview from a hotel lounge, weeping artificially into a silk handkerchief, claiming that I had used my massive wealth and political influence to snatch her newborn child from her arms using a corrupt housekeeper.

Inside my study, the mood was tense.

Marcus Vance paced across the Persian rug, gesturing wildly with a thick stack of legal briefs. Vanessa Reid sat in the corner, looking pale and exhausted, having spent the night testifying before the State Medical Ethics Board.

“She’s turning this into a spectacle, Alexander,” Marcus warned, setting his papers on my desk. “Judge Harrison is a traditionalist. He hates media circus trials. If Madeline convinces him that your household is chaotic, unstable, or complicit in a kidnapping, he might grant her temporary custody pending the federal investigation.”

“My household is not chaotic,” I stated calmly, looking up from my laptop.

“You have a housekeeper under house arrest for baby snatching, a former fiancée facing medical license revocation, an eight-year-old squatter, and an ailing elderly woman!” Marcus shouted, throwing his hands up in the air. “To an outsider, this looks like a circus!”

Just then, the study door opened.

Ruby walked in, carrying a small silver tray with a cup of hot tea. She carefully navigated around Marcus’s briefcase, balancing the cup with extreme concentration, and set it on my desk.

“Here, Mr. Alexander,” Ruby said proudly. “Mrs. Hannah helped me make it. You look stressed.”

I looked at the little girl, then looked up at Marcus. The tension in the room suddenly melted away.

I picked up the tea cup and took a small sip. “Thank you, Ruby. It’s perfect.”

Ruby smiled brightly and ran back out to play with the puppy I had adopted for her the day before.

Marcus sighed, rubbing his temples, a soft, reluctant smile touching his lips. “Okay. She’s adorable. But the judge isn't going to decide this based on tea.”

“No,” I agreed, standing up and closing my laptop. “He’s going to decide it based on facts. Vanessa, did you secure the clinic’s digital access logs?”

Vanessa stood up, holding a encrypted flash drive. “Yes. I spent twelve hours with the IT forensics team. The digital signature on the embryo release form wasn't mine. It was forged using a IP address traced directly to Madeline Cross’s personal penthouse.”

“And what about the bank statements?” I asked Marcus.

“We tracked a two-hundred-thousand-dollar wire transfer from Madeline’s offshore account directly to the clinic technician who facilitated the theft,” Marcus confirmed, a cold, victorious glint returning to his eyes. “The technician cracked under FBI questioning two hours ago. He signed a full confession implicating Madeline as the mastermind.”

I walked over to the tall windows, looking out at the flashing cameras beyond my gate.

“Madeline wanted a circus,” I whispered, watching a hawk soar through the grey sky above the estate. “Tomorrow, I’m going to give her a execution.”
