Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Legacy

Inside Vault B, preserved behind clear glass panels, sat row upon row of cryogenic storage tanks, alongside thirty thick leather-bound laboratory ledgers spanning fifteen years of operations.

On the central desk lay a sealed glass container containing a single silver hard drive, labeled with a red sticker: PROJECT BLOODLINE - MASTER AUDIT LOGS.

I picked up the drive. It was cool to the touch.

Beside the drive lay a small leather diary with Dr. Thorne’s initials stamped on the cover. I opened it to the final entry, dated three weeks ago:

“If Nathan Carter is reading this, he has found Leo. Arthur Vance forced me to initiate three surrogate pregnancies using Nathan’s preserved samples, intending to use the children as leverage to control the Carter Logistics Trust. Two of the pregnancies failed. The third produced a healthy boy. I could not allow Arthur to raise this child as a pawn for his corporate greed. I smuggled the infant out of the facility tonight with the help of a local contact. I am going into hiding. God forgive me for what I helped create.”

My throat tightened as I read the words.

Leo wasn't just a random baby who happened to end up near my property. He was the survivor of a monstrous, calculated conspiracy designed to strip my family of everything we had built.

“Boss,” Ronin called out from the doorway, checking his tactical wrist monitor. “We have incoming. Three black SUVs just parked outside the front entrance. Heavy armaments.”

I snapped the diary shut and slipped the silver hard drive into my inner coat pocket. “Arthur Vance?”

“Looks like it,” Ronin replied, his face darkening. “He must have been monitoring Julian’s laptop feed. They’re coming down the main staircase now.”

I looked at Julian Vance, who was sitting on the concrete floor, his hands cuffed behind his back. A grotesque, desperate smile spread across his face.

“My brother isn't going to let you walk out of here with that drive, Nathan,” Julian sneered. “He has fifty million dollars riding on the takeover of Carter Logistics. He’ll burn this entire block to the ground with you inside it!”

I knelt down in front of Julian, grabbing him by his silk tie, pulling his face six inches from mine.

“Your brother made one fatal mistake, Julian,” I said softly. “He thought I was still the sick man undergoing chemotherapy twelve years ago. He forgot who built Carter Logistics from the ground up.”

I turned to Ronin. “Activate the signal jammers. Block all external communications. Then open the emergency fire exit to the subway tunnel.”

“And what about him?” Ronin asked, nodding toward Julian.

“We’re taking him with us,” I said. “He’s going to be the state’s key witness when federal prosecutors dismantle the Vance family empire.”

We pulled Julian to his feet and moved quickly through the rear door of the vault, entering a narrow maintenance tunnel that led toward the abandoned 191st Street subway line.

Behind us, heavy boots echoed down the concrete hallway as Arthur Vance’s mercenaries kicked open the double glass doors of the sub-basement.

“Search the vault!” Arthur Vance’s voice bellowed through the corridor—a voice I hadn't heard in five years, filled with toxic rage and desperation. “Find my brother! And kill anyone holding that drive!”

We slipped into the dark, damp subway tunnel just as explosive breaching charges detonated inside the sub-basement behind us, shaking the concrete floor and sending clouds of dust pouring through the access hatch.
