Chapter 9 - The Trial and the Truth

Three months later. January, 2027.

The Federal District Courthouse in Manhattan was packed with journalists, legal scholars, and citizens who had followed the incredible story of the Greenwich baby.

Arthur Vance and Julian Vance stood before the federal judge to receive their sentences.

The evidence presented by Marcus and the federal prosecutors—anchored by the silver hard drive recovered from Vault B—was absolute. Charges of conspiracy, human trafficking, evidence tampering, and corporate fraud were proved beyond any shadow of a doubt.

“The actions of Arthur Vance and Julian Vance represent a profound violation of human dignity and legal ethics,” the judge declared, his voice echoing off the dark wood paneling of the courtroom. “To weaponize the biological heritage of a recovering cancer survivor for corporate extortion is a level of malice this court rarely encounters.”

The judge slammed his gavel down with thunderous force.

“Arthur Vance is sentenced to forty-five years in federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole. Julian Vance is sentenced to twenty-five years.”

As the marshals led the two brothers away in chains, Arthur looked back one last time toward the gallery.

I sat in the front row, holding four-month-old Leo in my arms. Beside me sat Lily, wearing a beautiful green dress, her hair neatly braided, and Mrs. Harris, who smiled proudly at the verdict.

When Arthur’s eyes met mine, he saw no anger or hatred left in my face. He only saw a father, whole and complete, surrounded by those he loved.

After the court session adjourned, Marcus walked up to us with a bright smile, handing me an official blue binder stamped with the Seal of the State of Connecticut.

“It’s official, Nathan,” Marcus said warmly. “The paternity verification is complete, the birth certificate has been issued, and the federal court has formally recognized your full, unassailable parental rights over Leonardo Nathan Carter.”

I looked down at the document.

I ran my thumb over the gold state seal, feeling a wave of profound peace wash through my soul. The long, twelve-year nightmare that had started with a cancer diagnosis in a quiet hospital room was finally, permanently over.

“Come on, everyone,” I said, standing up and holding my son close to my chest. “Let's go home.”
