Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Lies

The fallout from Ethan’s press conference was explosive.
Within two hours, the media narrative completely inverted. Local television stations aired the financial audits, interview clips from neighbors who confirmed Derek’s harassment of Clare, and statements from former business associates who exposed Derek’s illegal gambling operations.
By six o'clock that evening, the media vans outside Ethan’s estate had vanished, replaced by news crews surrounding Derek Voss’s luxury apartment building in downtown St. Louis.
Inside the estate, the atmosphere was quiet and serene.
Ethan sat in the sunroom near the gardens, watching Sadie paint at a small wooden easel he had set up for her. She was dipping a paintbrush into bright blue and yellow watercolors, creating a picture of a large stone house surrounded by massive green trees.
Ethan walked over, pulling up a small wooden chair beside her. "That's a beautiful house, Sadie."
Sadie paused, her paintbrush hovering over the paper. She looked at the picture, then turned to look at Ethan.
"It’s this house," she whispered softly.
Ethan felt a warm swell of emotion in his chest. "I'm glad you like it here."
"Mr. Ethan?" Sadie asked, setting her brush down on the palette.
"Yes, Sadie?"
"Is Mama in heaven?"
Ethan paused, taking a slow, quiet breath. He looked into the little girl's clear, innocent eyes.
"Yes, Sadie," Ethan answered gently, reaching out to tuck a lock of hair behind her ear. "She is. And she’s watching over you and Emma every single second."
Sadie looked down at her small hands. "She was always tired before she went away. She used to cry in the kitchen when she thought I was sleeping. She said she was sorry she couldn't give us a real home."
Ethan reached out and gently covered her small hands with his own. "Your mom gave you everything she had, Sadie. She fought for you until her very last breath. And because she was so brave, she brought you to a place where you will always have a real home."
Sadie looked up at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "Are you going to go away too?"
The question was so fragile, so weighed down by a lifetime of loss, that it broke Ethan’s heart. He squeezed her small hands firmly.
"No, Sadie," Ethan said, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable certainty. "I am not going anywhere. I am staying right here. Forever."
At that moment, Mrs. Gable walked into the sunroom, carrying a cordless phone. "Mr. Cole, it’s Marcus Vance on line one. He says it’s urgent."
Ethan patted Sadie’s hand gently before standing up to accept the phone. "Marcus, what happened?"
"Ethan, we just got word from the Federal Building downtown," Marcus Vance reported, his voice filled with intense energy. "The FBI’s Financial Crimes Task Force just executed a search warrant on Derek Voss’s offices. They found three offshore bank accounts containing laundered funds, along with fraudulent loan applications using Clare Brooks' forged signature!"
Ethan’s eyes narrowed into sharp slits. "Did they arrest him?"
"He wasn't at his office, Ethan," Marcus warned, his tone suddenly shifting into acute alarm. "His attorney says he vanished about an hour ago. He abandoned his vehicle near the riverfront. We think he’s panicked."

Ethan’s heart gave a sudden, violent thud. He turned instantly to look out the glass doors toward the vast, dark treeline surrounding the estate grounds.
"Marcus," Ethan commanded, his voice dropping into immediate tactical priority. "Notify my private security detail at the front gate. Full lockdown on the perimeter. Right now!"
