Chapter 6 - The Breach

Night fell swiftly over West County, bringing with it a thick, rolling fog that swept through the dense woods surrounding the estate.

Inside the stone mansion, every exterior door was locked, and the perimeter security system was activated. Two armed private security officers patrolled the illuminated stone driveway, while Ethan stood near the front foyer monitors, reviewing real-time camera feeds of the surrounding fences.

In the second-floor bedroom, Mrs. Gable sat beside Sadie’s bed, reading her a fairytale story while baby Emma slept peacefully in her white crib.

Suddenly, a loud, metallic CRACK echoed from the rear courtyard garden, followed immediately by the piercing blare of the estate’s security alarms.

Red emergency lights began flashing softly along the hallways.

Ethan moved with instant, explosive speed. He reached into his study desk, retrieved a heavy tactical flashlight, and ran straight up the grand staircase toward the children's bedroom.

"Mrs. Gable! Lock the door behind me!" Ethan ordered as he burst into the room.

Sadie was sitting bolt upright in bed, her eyes wide with terror, clutching her stuffed teddy bear against her chest. "Mr. Ethan!"

"It’s okay, Sadie!" Ethan said, kneeling beside her bed, his voice firm and steady despite the adrenaline pumping through his veins. "The security system is doing its job. Mrs. Gable is going to stay right here with you and lock this door. No one is coming into this room."

Ethan turned to Mrs. Gable, handing her a heavy brass master key. "If anyone attempts to open this door who isn't me or the police, hit the panic button on the wall."

"Understood, Mr. Cole," Mrs. Gable said bravely, standing between the beds and the door.

Ethan stepped back out into the hallway, hearing the heavy deadbolt click into place behind him. He descended the stairs three at a time, moving toward the rear sunroom where the alarm had been triggered.

The heavy glass French doors leading out to the garden were shattered. Glass shards glittered like diamonds across the polished hardwood floor in the moonlight.

Standing in the center of the dark room, drenched in rain, holding a heavy iron crowbar, was Derek Voss.

His clothes were mud-stained, his hair wild and unkempt, his eyes bloodshot with absolute, unhinged desperation. He looked like a man who had lost everything and had nothing left to lose.

"Where are they?" Derek demanded, his voice hoarse and trembling violently. "Where is my daughter, Cole?"

Ethan didn't retreat. He stepped directly into the dark room, stopping ten feet from the desperate man, standing between Derek and the staircase leading to the children's bedroom.

"You're done, Derek," Ethan said, his voice dangerously calm, his posture rigid and unyielding. "The FBI has your offshore accounts. The police have this perimeter surrounded. There is nowhere left for you to run."

"I don't care about the accounts!" Derek screamed, raising the heavy iron crowbar. "That trust fund was mine! Clare ruined my life, and now you're stealing what’s left! Give me the baby, or I swear to God I’ll tear this house down!"

"You didn't care about Clare," Ethan said softly, taking a slow, deliberate step forward, pulling Derek’s attention entirely onto himself. "You didn't care about Emma when she was burning with a fever in a wet motel room. You only care about yourself."

"Shut up!" Derek roared, raising the crowbar and lunging forward with a wild, desperate swing aimed straight at Ethan’s head.

Ethan had spent twenty years in corporate boardrooms, but in his youth, he had been a collegiate wrestler. He ducked under the wild swing with fluid precision, stepping inside Derek’s reach.

Ethan grabbed Derek’s wrist with a crushing grip, twisting the joint upward.

CLATTER.

The iron crowbar slipped from Derek’s fingers, crashing loudly onto the floorboards.

Before Derek could recover, Ethan drove his shoulder into Derek’s chest, slamming the smaller man violently back against the wall. Ethan pinned him there, pressing his forearm heavily against Derek’s throat, immobilizing him completely.

"It’s over, Derek," Ethan growled into his ear, his voice vibrating with absolute dominance. "You lost."

At that exact moment, bright blue and red police lights flashed through the shattered sunroom windows. The heavy front doors of the estate swung open as three armed police officers and two security guards rushed into the foyer with flashlights drawn.

"Police! Don't move!" an officer shouted.

Ethan stepped back slowly, releasing his grip.

Derek collapsed onto his knees on the glass-littered floor, sobbing hysterically as the officers forced his arms behind his back and snapped cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Ethan didn't look back at him. He turned around, wiped a small smudge of dust from his sleeve, and walked back up the grand staircase to tell two little girls that the dark was finally gone.
