Chapter 8 - Exposing the Truth

"Your Honor," Eleanor Vance called out gracefully, stepping past the gallery bar. "Permission to submit critical evidence regarding the plaintiff, Julian Croft."
Julian’s lawyer jumped up. "Your Honor, this is highly irregular! Who is this woman?"
"This is Eleanor Vance," Judge Thorne said, raising an eyebrow. "And she is a trustee of the State Children's Advocacy Board. I will allow it."
Eleanor walked forward, handing a thick, sealed red folder to the bailiff, who delivered it directly to the judge’s bench.
"While Mr. Croft was preparing his hypocritical case," Eleanor said, her voice filled with regal authority, "investigators from St. Jude Security and the State Police completed a background investigation into Mr. Croft’s financial records over the last six months."
Judge Thorne opened the folder, her eyes scanning the certified documents inside. As she read, her brow furrowed into a deep, furious frown.
"It appears," Judge Thorne read aloud, "that Mr. Croft has accrued over eighty thousand dollars in illegal gambling debts to an organized crime syndicate. Furthermore, bank transfers reveal that Mr. Croft received a twenty-thousand-dollar cash payment three weeks ago from a former St. Jude board member—Arthur Vance, Mr. Daniel Vance’s disgraced cousin—specifically to file this fake custody lawsuit to create a corporate scandal."
Gasps erupted across the public gallery.
Julian’s face went completely ghost-white. He scrambled backward in his seat, looking frantically toward the exits.
"In addition," Judge Thorne continued, her voice cold as steel, "the Child Protective Services report concludes that Mr. Croft’s home environment is utterly unfit for a minor child, featuring evidence of active substance abuse and illegal gambling operations."
Judge Thorne slammed her gavel down with a thunderous crack that echoed off the high marble walls.
"This court finds the plaintiff, Julian Croft, to be completely unfit, fraudulent, and acting in bad faith. The petition for custody and visitation is dismissed with prejudice!"
She pointed her gavel directly at Julian.
"Furthermore, I am issuing a permanent Restraining Order against Mr. Croft. He is forbidden from coming within one thousand yards of Emily Vance or Emma Vance for the rest of his natural life. Bailiff, arrest Mr. Croft immediately on charges of fraud, perjury, and extortion!"
Two armed bailiffs swarmed Julian, slamming his hands behind his back and hauling him kicking and screaming out of the courtroom.
Emily burst into tears, her shoulders shaking with pure, unadulterated relief.

Before she could even step down from the witness stand, Daniel was there. He reached out, pulling her into a tight, warm embrace. Emily wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder as seven years of terror, pain, and exhaustion washed away.
"You're safe now, Emily," Daniel whispered into her hair, holding her tight against his chest. "You and Emma are safe forever."
