Chapter 9 - The Gala of Hearts

Six months later.

The Grand Ballroom of the St. Jude Medical Center was transformed into a breathtaking winter wonderland. Crystal chandeliers cast warm golden light across tables adorned with white roses, silver silk, and glowing candles. It was the annual St. Jude Philanthropy Gala—the most prestigious event of the year, attended by the city’s elite, top doctors, and civic leaders.

Tonight, however, the star of the evening was not a billionaire donor.

Emily walked into the ballroom wearing an emerald-green off-the-shoulder velvet gown that complemented her warm skin and dark hair perfectly. Her hair was styled in soft, elegant waves, and a simple diamond pendant—a gift from Eleanor—shimmered at her collarbone.

Beside her, seven-year-old Emma looked like a little princess in a matching blush-pink dress, her hand held tightly by Daniel, who looked impossibly handsome in a sharp black tuxedo.

As they walked through the room, doctors, nurses, and board members nodded and smiled at Emily with genuine respect. Over the last six months, Emily had expanded the hospital’s free community health outreach program, providing free emergency medical screenings for low-income families—the very program she had wished existed when she was struggling alone.

Daniel led Emily to the center stage. The room quieted down as he stepped up to the microphone, holding a glass of champagne.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Daniel’s voice resonated through the speakers. "Tonight, we celebrate the incredible achievements of St. Jude Medical System. But standard medicine alone does not heal people. Hope heals people. Empathy heals people."

He looked directly down at Emily, his eyes shining with open, unabashed love.

"Seven months ago, I watched a young nurse sacrifice the most important opportunity of her life to save a dying woman on a freezing street corner. She didn't know who that woman was. She didn't know there would be a reward. She did it because her heart was incapable of walking away from someone in pain."

He gestured for Emily to join him on stage. The crowd burst into thunderous applause as Emily stepped up beside him, blushing softly.

"Emily Vance brought more than just clinical brilliance to our hospital," Daniel continued, his voice thick with emotion. "She brought a soul back to our institution. And she brought life back to my heart."

Daniel handed his champagne glass to an assistant. Then, in front of five hundred high-society guests, doctors, board members, and little Emma watching from the front table with Eleanor, Daniel Vance dropped down on one knee.

The entire room let out a collective gasp.

Daniel reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box. He flipped it open, revealing a breathtaking pear-cut diamond ring set in a band of platinum.

"Emily," Daniel said, his voice raw, honest, and filled with passion. "You saved my mother. You transformed this hospital. And you showed me what true love, courage, and family really mean. I don't want to go another day without being your partner, your protector, and your husband."

He looked up into her tear-filled eyes, smiling tenderly.

"Emily Vance, will you marry me?"

Emily covered her mouth with both hands, tears of overwhelming joy streaming down her cheeks. She looked down at the man who had proven his love for her not with words, but with every single action he had taken to protect her and her daughter.

"Yes!" Emily cried out, her voice ringing clear through the ballroom. "Yes, Daniel! A thousand times yes!"

Daniel stood up, slid the glittering ring onto her finger, and pulled her into his arms, kissing her deeply as the entire ballroom erupted into standing ovations, cheers, and roaring applause.

Down at the front table, Emma jumped up and down, clapping her small hands with joy. "Yay! Mommy and Knight Daniel are getting married!"
