Chapter 5 - The Morning After the Lie

By sunrise, the financial news networks were in a frenzy.

“Vance International CEO Fallon Vance abruptly leaves major foundation launch.” “Rumors swirl regarding corporate leadership stability as Arthur Vance calls emergency board meeting.”

Inside the penthouse suite of the hospital, the three boys were sitting around a small breakfast table. The air was thick with confusion and unsaid questions.

Holden was conscious now, elevated in his hospital bed. His cardiac levels had stabilized, though he remained dangerously weak. He looked at his three sons, then at Fallon, who stood by the window, watching the street below where several news vans had already gathered.

"Boys," Holden said, his voice rough and quiet. "Come here."

Beckett, Sawyer, and Phoenix approached the bed cautiously.

"Is she really our mom?" Sawyer asked, pointing a small finger at Fallon. "The lady from the TV?"

Holden took a deep breath, looking up at Fallon, whose eyes were filled with unspoken heartbreak. "Yes, Sawyer. She’s your mother."

"Why wasn't she with us?" Beckett demanded, his young voice laced with a bitter hurt that made Fallon’s chest ache. "Why were we living in that small apartment eating cheap cereal while she lived in a skyscraper? Why did you tell us she died?"

"Beckett, stop," Holden commanded gently. "I told you she was gone because... because I had to protect you. Your mother didn't leave you. She didn't know where we were. I hid you from... from people who wanted to take you away."

"From her family," Fallon stepped forward, kneeling beside the boys so she was eye-level with them. "From my father. He lied to me. He told me you died when you were born. I spent ten years believing my heart was buried in the ground, boys. I didn't abandon you. I would have given up everything I owned—every penny, every building, every breath—just to hold you for one second."

Phoenix looked at her, his eyes wide. "So... you didn't hate us?"

"I loved you before you were even born," Fallon said, her voice cracking as she took Phoenix’s small hand. "And I have loved you every single day of my life, even when I thought you were gone."

Sawyer leaned forward and tentatively wrapped his arms around Fallon’s neck. Fallon buried her face in his small shoulder, weeping silently, holding him tight. Phoenix joined the hug a moment later, pressing his face against her jacket.

Only Beckett remained standing, his arms crossed, watching them with complicated, dark eyes. He wanted to believe her—he desperately wanted a mother—but ten years of watching his father struggle, skip meals, and work until his heart gave out couldn't be erased by a single morning.

Before Beckett could speak, the door to the suite burst open.

It wasn't Arthur Vance this time. It was Julian Vance, Fallon’s younger brother and the vice president of operations. He holding a tablet, his face pale with anxiety.

"Fallon, we have a massive problem," Julian said urgently, ignoring the boys and Holden. "Father just called an emergency press conference at headquarters for 9:00 AM. He’s announcing your immediate removal as CEO on grounds of emotional incapacity. He’s going to claim you’ve suffered a nervous breakdown tied to your past grief."

Fallon stood up, her eyes flashing with cold, tactical fire. "He’s trying to strip my authority before I can use corporate assets to fight him."

"It’s worse," Julian added, dropping his voice. "He’s filed an ex-parte emergency petition with the family court, claiming Holden Hayes is an unfit father who kidnapped corporate heirs ten years ago. Police officers and child protective agents are en route to this hospital right now to seize the boys."

Holden tried to sit up, his heart monitor spiking violently. "No! They can't—"

"Holden, lie down!" Fallon shouted, pressing him gently back against the pillows. She turned to Julian, her mind racing at lightspeed. "Julian, whose side are you on?"

Julian looked at Holden, then at his three young nephews who were staring at him in terror. He took a deep breath, his jaw tightening. "Father treated me like a pawn my whole life, Fallon. I watched what he did to you ten years ago. I was too young to stop him then. I’m not sixteen anymore."

Julian tossed a set of keys onto the hospital bed. "My private yacht is docked at Marina 4. I have a helicopter waiting on the helipad of this building. Take Holden and the boys and get out of the city before the police shut down the air space."

"No," Fallon said firmly, stepping away from the bed.

Julian blinked. "What do you mean, no? They're coming for the kids!"

"If I run, Arthur wins," Fallon said, her voice echoing with supreme authority. "He’ll spin the narrative, label us fugitives, and hunt us down until Holden dies of stress and the boys are placed in state custody. I’m done running from Arthur Vance."

She looked at Holden, then at her three sons.

May you like

"Where are you going?" Holden asked, his eyes wide with fear.

"To Father's press conference," Fallon replied, pulling a gold flash drive from her pocket—a drive containing ten years of financial records, offshore accounts, and the hidden medical documents she had spent years quietly assembling. "It’s time the world learned the truth about the Vance family legacy."
