Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Dark

The success of the gala cemented my position in Chicago society, but inside the Bellandi empire, a darker storm was brewing.

Three weeks after the gala, Dante began staying late in his study. The quiet evening dinners were frequently interrupted by Viktor bringing encrypted satellite phones or whispered reports about missing cargo shipments at the Port of Chicago.

One rainy Tuesday night, at two in the morning, I woke up to the faint sound of raised voices coming from the floor below.

I slipped out of bed, pulled a dark silk robe over my nightgown, and walked quietly down the corridor toward Dante’s private study.

The heavy oak door was ajar, casting a narrow strip of warm light across the Persian rug in the hallway.

"...it’s the Moretti family," Viktor’s deep voice carried through the crack. "They’re using the Crane family's shipping docks to move unregistered weapons into our territory. Don Carmelo Moretti knows you've been distracted with the children and the new marriage. He thinks you've grown soft."

I stopped outside the door, my breath catching in my throat.

"Carmelo Moretti is mistaken," Dante’s voice replied, terrifyingly cold. "Seize the shipment at Dock 42 tomorrow night. If Moretti's men resist... eliminate them."

"And what about Sebastian Crane?" Viktor asked. "Crane signed over his dock leases to Moretti three days ago. He’s helping them bypass our customs checkpoints in exchange for a percentage of the weapon sales."

A heavy silence fell over the room.

"Sebastian Crane is trying to play mafia boss to rebuild his fortune," Dante said, his voice dropping into a register that sent chills down my spine. "He thinks because he was Evelyn’s ex-husband, I won't touch him."

"Shall I handle Crane?" Viktor asked.

"No," Dante commanded. "Crane is a bug. But if he puts my wife or my children in danger by bringing Moretti’s war into our city... I will crush him myself."

I backed away from the door slowly, my heart pounding against my ribs.

Sebastian wasn't just a bitter ex-husband anymore. He was desperate. After his public humiliation at the Drake Hotel, his reputation had shattered, his high-society clients had abandoned him, and now he was digging his own grave by partnering with Dante’s deadliest rival.

I returned to the master suite and sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the rain hitting the window.

Ten minutes later, the door to the study opened, and Dante stepped into the bedroom. He looked exhausted, his tie loosened, his jacket removed, his dark hair slightly messier than usual.

He stopped when he saw me sitting up.

"Did I wake you?" Dante asked softly, walking over to the bed.

"No," I lied gently. "I was just thinking."

Dante sat beside me on the mattress. He reached out and touched my hand, his thumb stroking my knuckles.

"You look worried, Evelyn," he noted quietly. "What is on your mind?"

I looked into his gray eyes—the eyes of a man who ruled a dangerous world, yet treated me and his three motherless children with absolute reverence.

"I heard Viktor," I admitted quietly. "I heard about Sebastian and the Moretti family."

Dante’s expression darkened slightly, a flicker of guilt crossing his face. "You were not supposed to bear the weight of my world, Evelyn. I promised to protect you."

"You do protect me," I said, reaching up to lay my hand against his jaw. "But I am your wife, Dante. I didn't sign that contract just to live in a mansion and wear silk dresses. I signed it because I care about this family. I care about Leo, Mateo, Livia... and I care about you."

Dante froze. He stared at me, his gray eyes searching my face with an intensity that took my breath away.

"You care about me?" he whispered, as if the concept was something foreign and sacred.

"Yes, you stubborn, terrifying man," I murmured, a faint smile touching my lips. "I care about you very much. Sebastian Crane is an idiot who thinks money makes him dangerous. Don't let him threaten what we're building here."

Dante leaned forward, pressing his forehead against mine. His breath was warm against my skin, his large hands gently framing my face.

"Sebastian Crane is a ghost, Evelyn," Dante promised, his voice thick with emotion. "And I do not let ghosts touch my sun."

He leaned in and kissed me—not a brief, formal kiss like the one in the chapel, but a deep, fierce, possessive kiss that consumed every doubt, every fear, and every lingering shadow of my past.

When he pulled back, my lips were tingling, my heart racing, and I knew with absolute certainty that I would never look back again.
