Chapter 8 - The Triumph of the Bellandi

The aftermath of the gallery raid was swift, absolute, and total.

The Moretti crime family was completely dismantled within forty-eight hours after the Chicago Mafia Commission learned that Carmelo Moretti had attempted to kidnap a Don’s wife. Carmelo was permanently exiled from the city, his assets seized and absorbed by the Bellandi syndicate.

Sebastian Crane was arrested at the scene by federal agents. His trial was brief, public, and merciless. His mother, Victoria, was forced to sell the Crane estate to pay off his massive legal debts and back taxes.

In a twist of poetic justice that made headlines across Illinois, the Crane estate was purchased at a public auction by a blind trust.

A trust owned by Mrs. Evelyn Bellandi.

Six months after the gallery incident, I stood on the front lawn of the old Crane mansion in Lake Forest.

The heavy rain of the past was gone, replaced by a brilliant, warm spring sunshine that made the magnolia trees bloom in vibrant shades of pink and white.

A massive yellow demolition crane stood on the driveway.

Standing beside me were Dante, Leo, Mateo, and Livia.

Livia was wearing a little yellow hard hat that Madame Laurent had custom-made for her, holding Miss Pearl in her arms. Leo held a digital remote control device that Viktor had rigged up for him. Mateo sat on Dante’s shoulders, laughing as he pulled at his father’s dark hair.

"Are you sure you want to tear it down, Evelyn?" Dante asked, looking down at me with an affectionate, warm smile. "We could have turned it into a secondary estate."

"No," I said, looking at the stone house where I had suffered three years of humiliation, domestic servitude, and emotional abuse. "This place was a prison. I want to turn it into a public park and music school for children who have nowhere else to go."

"A very good domestic parameter," Dante agreed, wrapping his heavy arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side.

Leo looked up at me, holding the remote control. "Can I push the button now, Evelyn?"

"Go ahead, Leo," I smiled. "Blow it down."

Leo slammed his thumb down on the red button.

The massive steel wrecking ball swung forward, slamming straight through the front marble pillars of the Crane house with a glorious, thunderous CRASH.

Dust and marble shards exploded into the clear spring air.

Livia clapped her hands in pure delight. "Down goes the wet rat house!"

Mateo cheered from Dante’s shoulders, and even Leo let out a rare, triumphant laugh as the roof caved inward, erasing thirty years of Crane arrogance in a single afternoon.

Dante leaned down, pressing his lips softly against my temple.

"Happy, Mrs. Bellandi?" he whispered.

"Completely," I said, leaning my head against his chest, watching the dust settle over the ground where my old life had died.
