Chapter 5 - A Father's Blindness

Grant Whitman’s return brought a brief flurry of life to the cold mansion. He was a tall, distinguished man with silvering hair and deep lines of exhaustion around his eyes. It was clear he loved his son, but his grief had made him weak.
On Friday evening, Claire was serving dinner in the grand dining room. Grant sat at the head of the long table, Vanessa at the other end, radiant in emerald silk.
"I saw Noah earlier," Grant said, cutting his steak. "He seems... so distant, Vanessa. He didn't even look at me when I brought him the model airplane from London. Is the new therapy truly not working?"
"Oh, Grant," Vanessa said, her voice filled with sweet, patronizing sympathy. "The doctors explained this. The trauma of the crash is deeply embedded. He associates you with the accident because you were driving, remember?"
Claire almost dropped the gravy boat. She looked at Grant and saw the visible flinch of pain on his face. Vanessa was using Grant’s own guilt as a weapon to keep him away from his son. It was psychological torture.
"I just wish he would speak," Grant muttered, looking down at his plate. "Just one word."
"We must accept his limitations, darling," Vanessa said smoothly, reaching across the table to touch his hand. "I am doing everything I can. I give up my entire social calendar to supervise his care. You know how much I sacrifice for this family."
Claire’s grip on the silver tray tightened until her knuckles turned white. She wanted to scream the truth right there in front of the crystal and fine china. She wanted to tell Grant that his wife was poisoning his son with his own company's failed drugs. But she had no proof yet. She had to wait for Liam.
Later that night, as Claire was cleaning the kitchen, Grant walked in to get a glass of water. He looked broken, stripped of the confident demeanor he showed the business world.
"Claire, isn't it?" Grant asked quietly.
"Yes, Mr. Whitman," she replied, pausing her work.
"You spend a lot of time on Noah's floor. Does he... does he ever seem different when I'm not here? Does he ever try to say anything?"
Claire looked into the father's aching eyes. She knew Vanessa’s spies were everywhere, and saying too much right now could get her fired instantly, destroying her chance to save Noah. But she couldn't lie completely.
"He is a very smart boy, Mr. Whitman," Claire said carefully, choosing every word with extreme caution. "He notices everything. And I think... I think he wants to speak more than anyone realizes. He just needs the right environment to feel safe."
Grant stared at her, a spark of sudden realization lighting up his tired eyes. But before he could respond, Vanessa’s voice echoed from the kitchen doorway.
"Grant, darling? Why are you gossiping with the cleaning staff? Come upstairs, you have an early board meeting tomorrow."
The spark in Grant’s eyes vanished, replaced by compliance. "Of course, Vanessa. Goodnight, Claire."

Vanessa stayed behind for a moment, her eyes locking onto Claire with venomous intensity. "You are overstepping your bounds, maid," she whispered, her voice dropping all pretense of sweetness. "Speak to my husband again, and I will make sure you are blacklisted from every wealthy home in this state. You will be begging for scraps on the street."
Claire didn't back down. She looked Vanessa dead in the eyes. "Goodnight, Mrs. Whitman."
