Chapter 10 - The Sweetest Harvest

One year later, the historic house of Geneva Vance was alive with the sound of laughter, music, and the irresistible aroma of freshly baked pastries.

It was the grand opening of “Geneva’s Heritage Bakery & Sweets,” a beautiful new business Callie had launched right from the renovated carriage house on the property. The business was an instant success, utilizing Geneva’s family recipes to create the most sought-after desserts in the entire county.

The front yard was decorated with white lanterns and ribbons. The historic district neighbors, who had regained their properties thanks to the restitution funds, were all present, celebrating the revival of their community.

Geneva sat in a beautiful rocking chair on the porch, surrounded by friends. While her Alzheimer’s still brought moments of confusion, she was happy, healthy, and constantly showered with love. She had a specialized assistant who helped her every day, funded easily by the thriving bakery and her restored estate.

Callie stood by the bakery counter, looking out at the beautiful crowd. She wore a clean white apron over a stunning emerald dress.

Leo walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and kissing her cheek. "You did it, Callie. Look at this place. It’s exactly what your grandfather and mother would have wanted."

"We did it together, Leo," Callie said, turning in his arms to smile up at him. "I couldn't have done any of this without you."

Leo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it to reveal a beautiful, vintage gold ring set with a brilliant sapphire—the exact ring Arthur had given Geneva decades ago, which Geneva had secretly given to Leo a month prior during one of her lucid afternoons.

"Callie," Leo said, his voice filled with deep emotion. "You fought for your family with everything you had. You are the strongest, most loving person I have ever known. I want to build a life with you, right here, in the home we saved. Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure happiness filled Callie's eyes. "Yes, Leo! A million times, yes!"

As Leo slipped the ring onto her finger, the crowd on the lawn broke into spontaneous applause and cheers.

From the porch, Geneva watched the young couple, her face radiant with a beautiful, knowing smile. She lifted her teacup in a silent toast toward the clear blue sky, as if sending a message to Arthur and Clara above.

The broken Virgin Mary statue had been carefully repaired, its cracks filled with gold leaf in the traditional Japanese style of Kintsugi—making it stronger and more beautiful for having been broken. It sat proudly on the bakery entrance shelf, a symbol of their journey.

Callie had not stayed silent. She had stood up against the storm, and in doing so, she had transformed a cruel abandonment into a legacy of love, justice, and the sweetest harvest life could ever offer.
