Chapter 6 - The Turning of the Tide

By that afternoon, the quiet town of Fairview was engulfed in a legal storm. Leo had delivered the financial ledger, the bribery documents, and the audio recording to the State Attorney General’s Special Crimes Unit. Because the evidence involved public corruption and multi-million dollar fraud, the state authorities acted with terrifying speed.
Callie sat in the waiting room of the state police headquarters, her heart in her throat. She had brought Geneva with her, refusing to leave her at the apartment a second longer. The old woman sat next to her, happily eating a sugar cookie Callie had packed for her, completely oblivious to the chaos unfolding around them.
"Look, Callie," Geneva said suddenly, pointing at the television mounted on the wall. "That's the bad man from the truck."
Callie looked up. A breaking news report was airing on the local channel. The headline read: Fairview Developer Joel Vance Arrested on Charges of Grand Corruption and Financial Fraud.
The screen showed footage of Joel, his hands cuffed behind his back, being led out of his lavish corporate office by state investigators. Dakota followed closely behind, screaming at the cameras and trying to hide her face with her expensive designer purse.
Callie let out a long, shaky breath. It was finally happening. The justice that had been delayed for over a decade was finally catching up to them.
Leo walked out of a back office, a triumphant smile on his face. He knelt down in front of Callie and Geneva. "It's done, Callie. The state attorney has officially filed charges. They’ve frozen all of Joel and Dakota's assets, including the funds from the sale of Geneva’s house. The bank accounts are locked."
"What about Grandma’s house?" Callie asked desperately. "The people who bought it... can we get it back?"
Leo’s smile widened. "The sale was flagged as an illegal asset transfer because Geneva was forced to sign the papers under duress while mentally incapacitated. The state has voided the deed. The developers who bought it from Joel are being sued for complicity, and the house is legally being returned to Geneva’s estate immediately."
Tears of pure joy and relief streamed down Callie’s face. She turned to Geneva and took her fragile hands. "Grandma, did you hear that? You're going home. Your house belongs to you again."
Geneva blinked, a soft, beautiful smile spreading across her wrinkled face. For a brief, magical moment, the fog in her mind seemed to clear entirely. She looked deeply into Callie's eyes, her gaze sharp and filled with profound love.
"I knew you could do it, my sweet girl," Geneva whispered, her voice steady and clear. "Arthur always said you had the heart of a lion. Thank you for not giving up on an old woman."
Callie sobbed, burying her face in her grandmother's lap. Geneva stroked her hair gently, humming an old lullaby she used to sing when Callie was just a child.
But their victory wasn't completely without complications. An hour later, a legal representative from the county court arrived with a temporary emergency order.
"Miss Vance," the representative said professionally. "While Mr. Joel Vance’s trusteeship has been suspended due to his criminal charges, the court must appoint a neutral, professional third-party guardian to oversee Geneva Vance’s estate and physical care until a permanent competency hearing can be held in two months. Until then, she cannot return to her home alone, and she cannot remain in an uncertified private residence without regular state supervision."
The system was still trying to treat Geneva like a case file rather than a human being.
Leo stepped forward. "Your Honor's representative, we anticipate this. We are filing an expedited motion for kinship guardianship. Miss Callie Vance has been the sole caregiver for the past weeks and has immaculate medical records to prove her competence. Furthermore, we have a financial plan to ensure Geneva's needs are met without relying on the frozen estate funds."

"What financial plan?" Callie whispered to Leo, confused.
Leo winked at her. "Remember those old bonds we found at the bottom of the safety deposit box? I had them appraised by a financial expert while you were waiting. They weren't part of the corporate estate. They were personal bearer bonds bought by your grandfather in your mother's name. They are worth over four hundred thousand dollars today. And they belong entirely to you, Callie."
