Chapter 7 - The Promise in the Canyon

Six months later. Spring in Sedona.

The sun was setting behind the Cathedral Rock formations, painting the sky in breathtaking layers of gold, magenta, and purple. The temperature was mild, sweet with the scent of blooming orange blossoms and desert sage.

On the grand lawn of the estate, overlooking the vast red rock canyon, a small, intimate ceremony was taking place.

There were no press crews. There were no corporate board members or Scottsdale socialites.

Only twenty people sat in the white wooden chairs set up on the grass: Sheriff Thomas Ross, my new corporate executive team, the staff who had become like family to us, and the mothers from Tessa's foundation center.

At the altar, constructed from heavy timber and decorated with white desert roses, stood David Vance, officiating the ceremony.

I stood beside him, dressed in a black tuxedo, my heart beating with an incredible, joyous intensity. Beside me stood my two best men: five-year-old Lucas and Leo, dressed in matching little tuxedos with slicked-back hair, proudly holding two small velvet boxes containing our rings.

The soft music of an acoustic guitar drifted across the lawn.

Every head turned toward the stone steps of the mansion.

Tessa stepped out onto the porch.

My breath caught in my throat. She took my breath away.

She wore an elegant, off-the-shoulder ivory silk gown that flowed around her like water. Her dark hair was styled in loose waves, pinned back with silver wild-rose hair clips. She held a bouquet of white peonies and desert lavender, her eyes locked onto mine with a fierce, radiant love that brought tears to my eyes.

Walking beside her, holding her arm with pride, was Marcus, who had taken on the role of her protector and friend over the past eight months.

As she walked down the white aisle, the world around us vanished once more. There was no noise, no past, no painful memories—only the woman who had survived the storm and brought my world back to life.

She reached the altar, stepping up beside me. Marcus gave her a warm, protective nod before taking his seat.

Tessa looked up at me, her eyes shining with pure joy. "Hi," she whispered softly.

"Hi," I replied, my voice thick with emotion.

David Vance stepped forward, opening his book. "We are gathered here today in the presence of family and friends to unite Grant Whitlock and Tessa Monroe in holy matrimony..."

When it came time for the vows, I took Tessa's trembling hands in mine, looking deep into her eyes.

"Tessa," I said, my voice strong and clear across the canyon breeze. "Six years ago, I thought I knew what success meant. I thought it was measured in resorts, stock portfolios, and corporate power. But when I lost you, I realized that a life built on control is just a lonely cage. You gave me two beautiful sons. You fought through darkness and isolation with a strength that humbles me every day. Today, I promise to honor you, protect you, and cherish you. I promise to be the father our sons deserve, and the husband you have always merited. My heart, my fortune, and my life are yours—forever."

Tessa wiped a happy tear from her cheek, squeezing my hands tightly.

"Grant," she said, her voice clear and beautiful. "When I left Scottsdale, I thought my life was over. But even in the hardest nights, I kept believing that the man I fell in love with was still out there. You fought for our boys when you didn't even know them. You tore down walls to bring us home. Today, I don't give you my heart—because it has belonged to you since the day we met. I give you my future, my trust, and my eternal love."

David Vance smiled brightly. "By the power vested in me by the state of Arizona, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Grant, you may kiss your bride!"

I pulled Tessa into my arms and kissed her deeply, as the crowd erupted into warm, enthusiastic applause.

Lucas and Leo cheered loudly, tossing their velvet ring boxes into the air and rushing to tackle us into a giant family hug right at the altar.
