Chapter 6 - The Paperwork of Revenge

"She's not going anywhere!" Margaret shouted, her voice echoing up the high-ceilinged stairwell like an alarm bell.

She marched toward the center of the lodge, her snow-covered boots leaving dirty gray tracks across the hardwood floor. Colin and I walked down the stairs, side by side, while Emily stepped out from the side parlor, her military duffel bag slung over her shoulder.

Margaret stopped at the foot of the stairs, pointing the Manila envelope at my face.

"You think you're so clever, don't you?" Margaret hissed, her face contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. "You think you can come in here with your fancy uniform and your secret medals and humiliate me in front of my family?"

"Mom, stop," Colin pleaded, stepping in front of me on the stairs. "Please. It's midnight. Grandma is upstairs."

"Shut up, Colin!" Margaret snapped, waving him off with a violent jerk of her arm. "You don't know what she's done! You think she's a hero? She's a criminal!"

I stopped three steps from the bottom, looking down at her with cold, professional detachment. "Be very careful what you say next, Margaret. You are speaking to an officer of the United States Armed Forces."

"I don't give a damn about your Armed Forces!" Margaret screamed, slapping the Manila envelope against the wooden banister. "This is a formal report of tax fraud and illegal property transfer! I spent the last two hours at the police station with lawyer Henderson!"

Emily stepped forward, her hand instinctively hovering near her side. "What are you talking about?"

"In 2014," Margaret announced, her voice rising to a triumphant shriek, "Avery transferred two hundred and twenty thousand dollars into my mortgage escrow account to pay off the house! She claimed it was a 'personal gift' on her military tax filings! But lawyer Henderson says a gift of that size without a formal state declaration is illegal fraud!"

She pulled a stack of legal papers from the envelope, shaking them in the air.

"I filed a formal complaint with the IRS fraud tip line an hour ago!" Margaret declared, her eyes wide with manic satisfaction. "And I notified the Naval Criminal Investigative Service at Fort Snelling! They are opening an investigation into your financial records tomorrow morning, Commander! Let's see how long you keep command of your precious submarine when you're under federal indictment!"

The room went completely still.

Colin stared at his mother in absolute horror. "Mom... you reported your own daughter to NCIS? Because she paid off your house?!"

"She did it to control us!" Margaret screamed. "She did it so she could hold it over my head! Well, nobody controls me!"

I stood on the stair step, looking down at my mother.

For twenty years, I had thought her cruelty was born of grief. I had thought if I just gave her enough space, enough money, enough silence, she would eventually heal.

Now, looking at the legal papers in her hand, I realized the truth.

Margaret wasn't broken. She was toxic. And like a rogue current in a narrow channel, she would drag down anyone who stayed near her.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

I pulled it out. The screen showed an incoming encrypted call from Rear Admiral Thomas Vance, Commander of Submarine Group 7.

I swiped the screen open and brought the phone to my ear.

"Halstead," I said clearly.

"Avery," Admiral Vance's voice boomed through the speaker, crisp, military, and unyielding. "Your transport is ten minutes out from the lodge. We're diverting your flight directly to Andrews Air Force Base. The Pentagon has called an emergency briefing with the Joint Chiefs at 0800."

"Understood, Admiral," I replied, my eyes locked on Margaret's pale face. "Sir... I have a minor administrative situation at my current location. A civilian family member has made a fraudulent report to NCIS regarding a military housing stipend transfer from 2014."

On the other end of the line, Admiral Vance let out a short, harsh bark of laughter.

"A housing stipend transfer?" Vance growled. "Avery, your 2014 transfer was personally authorized by the Department of the Navy under the Gold Star Family Assistance Act after your father's service record was posthumously updated last month. It's fully tax-exempt and legally sealed under Executive Order 13526."

My eyes narrowed. "Posthumously updated, sir?"

"Your father's classified service in the Naval Reserve Submarine Force from 1972 to 1974 was formally declassified three weeks ago, Commander," Vance explained. "Your mother has been receiving a federal military survivor pension of three thousand dollars a month in her account for the last ten years, which she fraudulently listed as 'private insurance.'"

The phone speaker was loud enough in the quiet lodge for every word to echo clearly off the timber walls.

Margaret’s face went from pale white to a terrifying, translucent gray.

The Manila envelope slipped from her numb fingers, scattering white papers across the hardwood floor.
