Chapter 9 - Beneath the Pacific

Six months later.

Two hundred and fifty feet beneath the surface of the Philippine Sea, the silence was total.

Inside the Control Center of the USS Idaho, the only light came from the cool blue glow of the tactical navigation displays and the green sweeping arcs of the sonar consoles. The air was cool, clean, and smelled faintly of ozone and hydraulic fluid.

I sat in the Commanding Officer's chair, wearing my dark blue Navy working uniform, a cup of black coffee resting in the gymbal holder beside my armrest.

"Conn, Sonar," the speaker above my head crackled softly. "Contact Sierra-4, designated surface merchant vessel, course zero-nine-zero, speed twelve knots. No unusual acoustic signatures."

"Sonar, Conn, aye," I replied smoothly, my voice calm, steady, and authoritative. "Maintain passive tracking."

Beside me, the Executive Officer, Lieutenant Commander Dan Mercer, stepped up with a secure administrative clipboard.

"Morning, Skipper," Mercer said, handing me the morning message traffic log. "Routine communications satellite burst received at 0400. You have two personal family transmissions routed through Naval District Washington."

I took the clipboard, my eyes scanning the official military teleprinter text.

The first message was from Midshipman First Class Emily Halstead:

FROM: USNA ANNAPOLIS MD

TO: CO USS IDAHO (SSN-799)

SUBJECT: GRADUATION / COMMISSIONING

COMMANDER: GRADUATED TOP FIVE PERCENT OF CLASS. ASSIGNED TO SUBMARINE OFFICER BASIC COURSE GROTON CT. REQUESTING COMMANDER AVERY HALSTEAD ADMINISTER COMMISSIONING OATH AT ANNAPOLIS CEREMONY NEXT MONTH. GRANDMA RUTH AND COLIN ARRIVING DELEGATION. RESPECTFULLY, EMILY.

A warmth spread through my chest, deep and unshakeable. I marked APPROVED in red ink beside the message.

The second message was an administrative legal update from NCIS District 4:

FROM: NCIS FO DULUTH MN

TO: CO USS IDAHO (SSN-799)

SUBJECT: LEGAL PROCEEDINGS - MARGARET HALSTEAD

MA’AM: DEFENDANT MARGARET HALSTEAD EXECUTED PLEA AGREEMENT RE: FEDERAL WIRE FRAUD. FULL RESTITUTION ORDERED TO VA SURVIVOR FUND ($360,000). FIVE YEARS PROBATION, 1,000 HOURS COMMUNITY SERVICE. INDIVIDUAL HAS VACATED HIBBING PROPERTY. PROPERTY TRANSFERRED TO COLIN HALSTEAD. CASE CLOSED.

I read the printout twice, then quietly set the clipboard back on Mercer's desk.

There was no anger left in me. No bitter desire for vengeance. Margaret had been stripped of her weapon—her lies—and made to face the reality of her own choices. She would live out her days in quiet obscurity, while the family she tried to break moved forward into the light.

"Good news, Skipper?" Mercer asked softly, watching my expression.

I looked around the quiet, hyper-efficient Control Center of my submarine. I looked at the young sailors sitting at the hydroplane controls, monitoring the reactor systems, tracking acoustic contacts with absolute precision and dedication.

"The best news, XO," I said softly.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small brass object—a vintage 1974 Submarine Warfare insignia pin that Colin had found inside my father's old trunk in Grandma's attic and mailed to Pearl Harbor before we deployed.

I ran my thumb over the raised silver dolphins and the hull of the submarine depicted on the brass.

My father had never made it to sea. But his daughter was here, commanding the most advanced warship on Earth, guiding one hundred and thirty-four sailors safely through the deep dark ocean.

"Officer of the Deck," I called out clearly.

"OOD, aye, Skipper!" Lieutenant Torres answered, turning from the periscope well.

"Change course to two-seven-zero," I ordered, my voice steady and clear. "Bring us to periscope depth. Let's get a look at the sunrise."
