Chapter 10 - The Legacy of Love

Three years later.
Spring had arrived in Newark, New Jersey.
The afternoon sun streamed warmly through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the newly opened Margaret Vance Pediatric Surgical Center—a state-of-the-art, non-profit hospital built entirely through grants, donations, and Logan’s personal surgical earnings.
The hospital was designed specifically to provide free, world-class neurosurgery and facial reconstruction to children from low-income families across the globe.
Inside the bright, sunlit courtyard, children were playing on a wooden playground set, their laughter filling the clear spring air.
Logan stood near the entrance of the courtyard, wearing his white doctor’s coat over a simple dark sweater. At thirty-one, his presence was more commanding than ever, his sea-green eyes full of a quiet, unshakeable peace.
Beside him in a comfortable armchair sat Margaret, now eighty years old. Though her body had grown somewhat frail, her spirit remained as vibrant and powerful as the day she had first held an abandoned baby in Room 412.
A young mother walked up to them, holding a tiny, six-month-old infant in her arms.
The baby had a brilliant, dark purple-crimson birthmark covering the right side of her tiny face.
The young mother looked at Logan, her eyes filled with tears of anxiety and hope. "Dr. Thorne... the doctors in my hometown said she would be teased... they said her mark was a tragedy... I came here because I didn't know where else to go."
Logan stepped forward, leaning down with deep tenderness. He reached out with one large, steady finger, gently touching the infant’s tiny cheek right over the crimson mark. The baby gurgled happily, reaching up with tiny hands to grab hold of Logan’s white coat.
Logan looked up at the young mother, his smile warm, bright, and utterly confident.
"Your daughter is not a tragedy," Logan said gently, his voice echoing with absolute truth. "She is a masterpiece. Her mark means she was born to do extraordinary things."
He looked back at Margaret, who smiled at him with tears of pure love shimmering in her eyes.
"Bring her inside," Logan said smoothly, opening the heavy glass doors of the hospital. "Let’s show her how bright her world is going to be."
As Logan walked into the hospital, holding the infant safely in his arms with Margaret walking proudly by his side, the warm spring sunlight bathed them in a golden glow.
