Chapter 3 - The Escape into the Storm

"You bitch!" Richard roared, his face contorting into a mask of pure rage. He dropped the ruined, smoking locket onto the floor and reached into his coat for a weapon.

"Marcus, NOW!" Evelyn screamed.

Before Richard could draw his gun, Marcus fired a non-lethal flashbang grenade from the balcony above.

A blinding white light burst through the center of the ballroom, accompanied by a deafening boom that shattered three adjacent glass displays. The crowd shrieked in terror as smoke billowed across the floor.

"Move! Move!" Marcus shouted, descending the service stairs at full speed with his men.

Evelyn grabbed my hand with iron strength, while Marcus’s second-in-command supported my mother. We scrambled through the blinding smoke toward the private service elevator located behind the catering kitchen.

Behind us, gunshots echoed through the grand hall as Richard’s men blind-fired into the haze.

"In here! Fast!" Marcus yelled, holding the heavy steel elevator doors open.

We tumbled inside—Evelyn, Sarah, myself, Marcus, and two security guards. Marcus slammed his keycard into the control panel and pressed the button for the underground parking garage. The doors slid shut just as heavy boots slammed against the outer wall.

The elevator descended rapidly. Inside the small metal box, the sound of our ragged breathing was deafening.

My mother collapsed onto her knees, pulling me into her arms. She buried her face in my wet hair, weeping uncontrollably. "Clara... my baby... oh God, you made it. You made it to her."

"I did, Mom," I sobbed, wrapping my arms tightly around her neck. "I gave her the necklace like you said."

Evelyn dropped to her knees beside us, completely unbothered by the dirty metal floor of the service elevator. She put her arms around both of us, holding her daughter and granddaughter close.

"I’m so sorry, Sarah," Evelyn whispered, tears ruining her perfectly applied makeup. "I’m so sorry I didn't believe you twenty years ago. I thought you were just rebellious... I had no idea what Richard was doing to the family."

"He poisoned Father, Mom," Sarah choked out, looking up at Evelyn with haunted eyes. "Twenty years ago... Father didn't die of a heart attack. Richard was slowly feeding him heavy metal toxins through his medication. When I found out, he threatened to kill you unless I ran away and took the blame for the missing files."

Evelyn froze, her eyes turning pitch black with an unimaginable rage. "He poisoned Arthur?"

"Yes," Sarah nodded weakely. "I’ve spent twenty years living in the shadows, moving from city to city, trying to build a digital decryption tool that could expose his entire network. The real files aren't in that locket, Mom."

Evelyn blinked. "They aren't?"

Sarah looked down at me, placing her trembling hand gently behind my left ear—touching the small, uniquely shaped birthmark that matched the one my grandmother had.

"The drive in the locket was a decoy," Sarah revealed softly. "The real decryption code... is hardcoded into an encrypted cloud server registered under Clara’s biometric birth signature. Clara isn't just my daughter, Mom. She is the living vault."

A heavy ding echoed through the elevator as it arrived at the sub-basement parking level.

The steel doors slid open, revealing a fleet of black bulletproof SUVs waiting with their engines idling.

"We have to move now, Mrs. Whitmore," Marcus urged, stepping out first with his weapon raised. "Richard’s men will have the building perimeter surrounded in less than two minutes."

"Where are we going?" Evelyn asked, helping Sarah stand up.

"The safehouse in upstate New York," Marcus replied, ushering us into the middle SUV. "It’s off the grid, fully fortified, and Richard doesn't know it exists."

As the heavy armored doors of the SUV clicked shut, locking us inside the dark leather interior, I looked out the tinted window. Through the rain-streaked glass of the garage exit, I saw three black sedans tearing around the corner, their high beams cutting through the dark.

The war for the Whitmore empire had officially begun, and I was sitting right at the center of it.
