Chapter 7 - The Trial at Manhattan Supreme

The grand marble steps of the Manhattan Supreme Court building were swarming with reporters, news vans, and flashing police lights by eight o'clock the next morning.
Rumors had leaked across Wall Street that the elusive, legendary widow Evelyn Whitmore was making a public appearance alongside her long-lost daughter and granddaughter to contest a sudden corporate custody battle.
A fleet of three black armored Cadillacs pulled up to the curb, escorted by six private motorcycle guards.
The media erupted into a frenzy of camera flashes as Marcus opened the door of the center vehicle.
First stepped Evelyn Whitmore, dressed in a sharp, dark navy wool suit, her diamond brooch gleaming on her lapel. Behind her came Sarah, looking regal and composed in a cream silk dress, her chin held high despite the pale bruises visible on her collarbone.
And then came me.
I wore a simple, tailored navy coat matching my grandmother's, holding Evelyn's hand on my right and my mother's on my left. I didn't look down. I didn't hide from the flashing lights. I held my head up just like my mother had taught me.
As we pushed through the sea of reporters, a tall figure stepped out from the main court doors above.
Richard Montgomery stood flanked by four top-tier defense attorneys, a smug, triumphant smile plastered across his face.
"Evelyn," Richard called out as we reached the top of the steps. "You always did love a dramatic entrance. But I’m afraid drama won't save you from a legal court order."
"Keep walking, Richard," Evelyn said without slowing her pace. "Save your breath for the judge. You're going to need every lie you can muster."
Inside Courtroom 402, the air was cold and smelled of old paper and furniture polish.
Judge Harold Vance—a man whose career had been secretly financed by Montgomery contributions for a decade—sat high on the bench, his gavel resting ready in his hand.
"This court is now in session," the bailiff announced.
Richard’s lead attorney stood up immediately. "Your Honor, we are petitioning for the immediate execution of the emergency guardianship order. Sarah Whitmore has been mentally unstable for two decades, living off the grid and exposing her minor child, Clara, to extreme neglect and physical danger."
"That is an utter fabrication, Your Honor!" Evelyn's chief counsel, Jonathan Sterling, countered loudly as he stood up. "We have comprehensive medical records certified by the Chief of Medicine at Presbyterian Hospital proving Sarah Whitmore is in complete health, and that Clara Whitmore has been exceptionally educated and cared for!"
Judge Vance slammed his gavel down hard. "Silence!"
The judge adjusted his spectacles, looking down at Sarah with a cold, dismissive glare. "Mrs. Whitmore, your sudden reappearance after twenty years raises serious concerns regarding child welfare. Pending a full psychiatric evaluation, this court orders that Clara Whitmore be placed into temporary protective custody under the supervision of Mr. Richard Montgomery, as trustee of the Whitmore estate."
A smug, vicious grin spread across Richard's face. He turned toward the gallery, signaling his men to step forward.
"No!" Sarah screamed, standing up from the defense table. "You can't take my child!"
"Bailiff! Secure the room!" Judge Vance ordered, slamming the gavel again.
"Hold your gavel, Harold!" Evelyn’s voice boomed across the courtroom, so loud and commanding that even the armed bailiffs froze in place.
Evelyn stepped forward, standing directly in front of the judge’s bench. She reached into her leather briefcase and pulled out a sleek silver laptop, connecting it directly to the courtroom’s primary digital display monitors.
"Your Honor," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with lethal sarcasm. "Before you execute that fraudulent order, perhaps you would like to explain to the court—and the federal prosecutors currently standing in the back of this room—why three million dollars was transferred from a Montgomery shell account in the Cayman Islands into your personal family trust account two nights ago?"
Judge Vance’s face turned from red to an absolute chalk white. His hand froze over his gavel. "What... what nonsense is this?!"
On the giant digital screens mounted on the courtroom walls, a massive spread of financial ledgers, bank routing numbers, and encrypted text messages flickered into crystal-clear view.
"That is a live feed from the Whitmore Master Server," Sarah announced, stepping beside her mother, holding my hand firmly. "Unlocked twenty minutes ago by my daughter’s biometric signature."
Sarah looked directly at Richard, whose smug smile had entirely evaporated.
"It contains twenty years of internal communications," Sarah continued, her voice echoing through the silent court. "Audio recordings of Richard Montgomery discussing the administration of neurotoxins to my father, full tax evasion records for Montgomery Global, and wiretap logs proving Richard bribed Judge Harold Vance to issue this exact guardianship order today."
The back doors of the courtroom slammed open.

Six agents in dark blue jackets with yellow FBI letters across their backs marched down the center aisle, led by a stern-faced woman holding a federal arrest warrant.
"Richard Montgomery! Judge Harold Vance!" the lead agent announced, her voice booming over the chaos. "You are both under arrest for federal conspiracy, corporate fraud, bribery, and suspicion of first-degree murder!"
