Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Vanessa

While Daniel’s life was being dismantled in family court, Vanessa Reed was discovering that federal prison cells did not care about her designer clothes, her country club connections, or her practiced charm.
Held without bail at the Hartford Women's Correctional Facility due to being classified as a flight risk, Vanessa sat in a cold, cinder-block interview room. Her manicured nails were chipped, her golden hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail, and she wore a bright orange prison jumpsuit.
Sitting across from her was Assistant District Attorney Marcus Brody, along with FBI Special Agent Katherine Stone.
On the metal table between them sat a thick stack of bank records, phone transcripts, and hard drives seized from Vanessa’s apartment.
"Ms. Reed," Agent Stone began, opening a file. "Let's review where we are. We have uncovered four separate offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands under your name. Over the last eighteen months, you funneled nearly three hundred thousand dollars out of local small business accounts where you worked as a freelance bookkeeper."
Vanessa folded her arms, trying to maintain her arrogant sneer. "Those were legitimate consulting fees. My lawyer will prove that in court."
ADA Brody laughed softly. "Your lawyer, Ms. Reed, just filed a motion to withdraw from your case because your retainer check bounced."
Vanessa’s sneer vanished. "What?"
"You're broke, Vanessa," Brody said plainly. "When Colonel Bennett took over the Hayes mortgage, she also initiated a forensic audit of the property’s financial history. That audit alerted federal bank regulators to the illegal wire transfers you made using Linda Hayes’ social security number."
Vanessa leaned forward, her voice rising in frantic panic. "It was Daniel’s idea! Daniel told me his parents were old and didn't check their accounts! He said we could take the money, use it to pay off his debts, and then buy the house back from the bank at a discount! He promised me we would live in that house!"
"And you believed him?" Agent Stone asked, eyebrow raised. "You believed a man who was lying to his pregnant wife would be honest with his mistress?"
"He said she was nobody!" Vanessa screamed, banging her fists on the metal table. "He said Claire was a pathetic, low-paid clerk who didn't care about anything! How was I supposed to know she was a multi-millionaire Army Colonel with the federal government backing her up?!"
Agent Stone leaned back, looking at Vanessa with cold satisfaction. "Ignorance of the law—and ignorance of your victim’s rank—is not a defense, Ms. Reed. Here is the plea offer from the United States Attorney."
Brody slid a single sheet of paper across the table.
"Option A," Brody stated. "You plead guilty to two counts of wire fraud and one count of identity theft. You agree to testify against Daniel Hayes in his upcoming criminal trial. You receive a recommended sentence of seven years in federal prison, followed by full financial restitution of three hundred and twenty thousand dollars."
Vanessa gasped. "Seven years?! That’s impossible! What’s Option B?!"
"Option B," Brody said, his voice dropping into a dark, solemn tone, "is we take this to trial. With Colonel Bennett as the key prosecution witness, accompanied by FBI forensic accountants and military intelligence witnesses. If you lose—and you will lose—the statutory minimum is twenty-two years."
Vanessa stared at the paper. The harsh fluorescent lights of the interrogation room hummed loudly above her.
She thought about her luxury apartment, her dinners at high-end restaurants, the praise she had soaked in while standing on the Hayes family porch claiming she had saved their home.
It was all gone. Replaced by orange cloth, cold steel, and seven years behind iron bars.

"Where do I sign?" Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking as a single, dirty tear rolled down her pale cheek.
Agent Stone handed her a pen. "Sign on the dotted line, Ms. Reed. And remember... Colonel Bennett sends her regards."
