Chapter 8 - The New Command

Three months later, the main parade grounds at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C., were dressed in full military ceremonial flags.

The brass band played traditional Army marches as hundreds of officers, diplomats, and family members sat in the grandstands under a brilliant blue summer sky.

I stood on the review field in my full Service Dress Blue uniform, wearing the newly pinned insignia of my promotion.

"Attention to Orders!" the master of ceremonies announced through the loudspeaker system.

General Richard Vance stepped forward, reading from an official parchment scroll issued by the President of the United States and the Secretary of the Army.

"For exceptionally meritorious service, superior leadership, and unwavering dedication to duty while serving in positions of major responsibility: Colonel Claire Bennett is hereby promoted to the rank of Brigadier General, United States Army, and appointed Deputy Director of Logistics for the Joint Chiefs of Staff."

A thunderous round of applause erupted from the stands.

General Vance stepped up to me, removing my Colonel's eagles and pinning the gleaming silver star of a General Officer onto my shoulders.

He leaned in, shaking my hand with deep warmth. "Congratulations, General Bennett. No one deserves this star more than you."

"Thank you, General," I said, executing a sharp, proud salute.

From the front row of the VIP viewing grandstand, Clara sat holding Ethan and Grace, both dressed in tiny white outfits. Beside them sat Clara’s brother, David Vance—a brilliant federal prosecutor whom I had been quietly dating for the past four months.

David was a man of quiet strength, integrity, and deep kindness. Unlike Daniel, who had sought status and control, David looked at me not with insecurity, but with profound pride and admiration.

As I walked off the review field after the ceremony, David stood up, smiling broadly as he stepped forward to meet me.

"Congratulations, General Bennett," David said, his eyes filled with warmth.

"Thank you, David," I smiled.

He pulled me into a gentle, supportive embrace, kissing my cheek softly before turning to take Ethan from Clara’s arms.

Ethan looked at the silver star gleaming on my shoulder, reaching out his tiny finger to touch the bright metal.

"Star!" Ethan babbled happily, his first clear word echoing in the warm afternoon air.

David laughed, lifting Ethan higher onto his shoulder. "That's right, buddy. Your mom is a star."

I looked at Grace, who was smiling in Clara’s arms, her eyes bright and filled with life.

The nightmare of the hospital room, the cold isolation of Daniel’s betrayal, and the toxic shadows of the Hayes family had vanished completely, burned away by the light of a new life built on truth, power, and genuine love.
