Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Hales

Within twenty minutes, the Westchester mansion was secured.

Federal agents swarmed the corridors, bagging evidence, securing the basement server rooms, and placing Marlene Pike in heavy steel cuffs. Paramedics tended to her shoulder wound before hauling her out to a waiting transport van.

Down in the grand foyer, the crystal chandelier cast light over a scene of absolute chaos. State police officers stood by the exits, while financial crimes investigators carried out armloads of encrypted hard drives retrieved from Marleneโ€™s hidden office nook behind the pantry.

Adrian sat on the bottom step of the grand staircase, holding Owen in his arms. Ellis sat beside him, clutching the edge of his fatherโ€™s jacket.

Marin stood in front of them, her hands shoved deep into the pockets of her coat, her breath still misting slightly in the chilly air of the drafty entryway.

โ€œThe federal task force has been tracking Sterlingโ€™s financial network for eighteen months,โ€ Marin said, her voice steady, though her eyes were shining with unshed tears. โ€œThey knew Marlene was embedded here, but they didn't have the physical evidence linking her to Elenaโ€™s murder. The micro-cassette... it was the missing piece.โ€

Adrian looked up at her. The harsh overhead lighting caught the dark circles under his eyes, the stubble on his jaw, and the raw, agonizing vulnerability written across his face.

โ€œYou knew who I was when you applied for the job,โ€ Adrian said quietly.

โ€œI knew,โ€ Marin nodded. โ€œI needed to get inside to find the tape before Marlene destroyed it. She suspected Elena had hidden a recording somewhere in the vault, but she couldn't find the combination to the inner safe. She was searching the house room by room.โ€

โ€œAnd the boys?โ€ Adrianโ€™s voice cracked. โ€œDid you... were you just using them to get close to the cedar chest?โ€

Marinโ€™s expression softened. She knelt down on the marble floor, coming face-to-face with Owen, who blinked sleepily and reached out a tiny hand to touch the zipper of her coat.

โ€œNo,โ€ Marin whispered, gently taking Owenโ€™s small hand in hers. โ€œI didn't plan on loving them. But when I walked in here and saw how neglected, how terrified they were... how much they reminded me of Elena when she was little... I couldn't just be an operative. I had to be their aunt.โ€

The word hit Adrian like a physical blow. Aunt.

Family. The very thing he had systematically destroyed through his cold, corporate detachment.

โ€œI failed them, Marin,โ€ Adrian said, his voice breaking as a tear finally spilled over his lashes. โ€œI failed your sister. I let monsters into our home, and I blamed her for being afraid.โ€

โ€œYes, you did,โ€ Marin said honestly, looking him straight in the eyes. There was no pity in her gaze, only a fierce, protective dignity. โ€œYou were a terrible husband, Adrian. And you were well on your way to becoming a terrible father.โ€

She stood up, brushing off her jeans.

โ€œThe question is... what are you going to do now that youโ€™re awake?โ€
