Chapter 9 - Shadows Fading

The legal proceedings against Arthur Sterling reached their conclusion in late October, just as the leaves outside the Westchester mansion began to turn amber and gold.
Sterling was convicted on seventeen counts of corporate racketeering, conspiracy, and accessory to murder. The judge handed down a mandatory sentence of forty-five years without parole. The billionaire empire that had terrorized the East Coast financial sector collapsed overnight, its assets seized and liquidated to compensate victims.
On a crisp Friday afternoon, Adrian stood by the gated entrance of the estate with a heavy cardboard box in his hands.
Inside the box were the last remaining relics of the dark chapterโMarleneโs personnel file, old billing records from shell companies, and copies of the falsified medical reports.
He walked down the private road toward the large industrial burn barrel the groundskeepers used for yard waste.
He tipped the box forward, dumping the papers into the rusted metal cylinder. He struck a wooden match, watched the flame catch a corner of the old paperwork, and tossed it in.
Flames flared up, bright and crackling, devouring the lies, the poison, and the ghosts of a suffocating past.
As the smoke drifted up into the autumn sky, Adrian felt a profound sense of lightness settle into his bones. The house behind him wasn't a mausoleum anymore. It was alive with the sound of running footsteps, childish laughter, and the steady, reassuring hum of a family stitched back together with patience, forgiveness, and unconditional love.
He turned away from the fire and walked back toward the house.

Through the sparkling kitchen windows, he could see Marin standing at the island, chopping apples for a pie, while Owen and Ellis banged wooden spoons against the tile in rhythm to some silent song.
Adrian wiped his hands on his jeans, pushed open the back door, and stepped inside where he belonged.
