Chapter 10 - The Sight of the Heart

Three years later.
The Hart estate had changed fundamentally. The dark, cold, paranoid atmosphere that had defined the house for twenty years was entirely gone. The tall iron gates were still there, and the security team remained the sharpest in the city, but the house itself was full of light, music, and warmth.
Eleven-year-old Maisie stood on the high stone terrace overlooking the lake.
She was taller now, her braids replaced by long, dark hair that blew gently in the spring breeze. She wore a tailored white wool coat. Beside her sat Cyrus—now a senior dog, his muzzle silvered with age, but his yellow eyes still bright, calm, and fanatically loyal.
A sleek black car pulled up the driveway.
Julian Hart stepped out, carrying a small leather briefcase. He had retired entirely from the violent street operations of the Underworld, having successfully transitioned his multi-billion-dollar empire into global logistics, green shipping, and medical research foundations. He was respected, legitimate, and feared only by those who attempted to break the law.
He walked up the terrace steps, a soft smile appearing on his face as he saw Maisie waiting for him.
"You're late," Maisie said, tilting her head toward him with a mischievous smile. "By four minutes."
"The traffic on the Outer Drive was dreadful," Julian smiled, stepping over to sit beside her on the stone bench. "And how was your day with the doctors in Boston?"
Maisie reached up, touching the delicate silver frame of the specialized optical glasses she had worn for the past six months following a series of revolutionary surgeries funded by Julian’s medical trust.
Slowly, carefully, she reached up and slid the glasses down her nose.
Her pale blue eyes focused.
They didn't see complete, sharp details—the world was still soft, blurred at the edges, like a watercolor painting left out in the rain.
But she saw the bright blue of the sky.
She saw the deep, golden coat of the massive dog resting his head against her knee.
And she looked up into the face of the man sitting beside her—the sharp jawline, the silver hair at his temples, and the light grey eyes that looked back at her with absolute, fatherly love.
"Well?" Julian asked softly, his voice catching slightly in his throat. "What do you see?"
Maisie smiled—a bright, silver light that illuminated the entire stone terrace.
She reached out her small hand, laying her palm flat over Julian’s heart, feeling the slow, steady, quiet rhythm beating beneath his dark coat.

"I see my family," Maisie whispered.
Cyrus let out a long, peaceful sigh, closing his eyes in the warm spring sun, as the former Mafia Don wrapped his arm around the shoulders of the little blind girl who had conquered his world without firing a single shot.
