Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of Detroit

The war with the Detroit Syndicate didn't last three months as the city had feared. It lasted four days.

Armed with the specific names, safe houses, and bank account details extracted from Kovak in the mansion cellar, Julian Hart launched a swift, ruthless counter-offensive that wiped out Viktor Vance's organization across three states.

By Sunday morning, the news channels reported a series of high-profile "corporate bankruptcies and sudden executive resignations" across the Midwest. To the public, it was business restructuring. To the Underworld, it was the complete, bloody annihilation of anyone who had dared challenge Julian Hart.

On Sunday afternoon, the rain finally cleared over Lake Michigan, leaving behind a crisp, golden autumn sky.

A heavy black delivery truck pulled up the long gravel driveway of the Hart estate. Two workmen unloaded a massive wooden crate and carried it out to the expansive rear lawn overlooking the lake.

Julian stood on the terrace, a cup of black coffee in his hand, watching.

Leo stood beside him, wearing clean, expensive dark clothes instead of his greasy mechanic's jumpsuit. He had been officially named the Head of Fleet Security for Hart Enterprises, with a salary that guaranteed he and his sister would never worry about money again for the rest of their lives.

"What's in the box, Mr. Hart?" Leo asked cautiously.

"A gift for your sister," Julian replied quietly. "And for the animal."

Down on the grass, Maisie was running through the autumn leaves, Cyrus bounding beside her, his dark tail waving like a flag in the wind. His bullet graze had been stitched by Julian's private physician and was healing cleanly beneath a fresh white bandage.

The workmen pried open the wooden crate.

Inside was a state-of-the-art custom agility course—wooden ramps, tunnel runs, weaving poles, and a massive heated shelter lined with cedar shavings and memory-foam bedding, large enough for a hundred-pound dog and a child to sit together comfortably out of the wind.

Maisie ran her small hands over the smooth, polished cedar wood of the shelter.

"It smells like Christmas," she declared, her face lighting up with a radiant smile.

Cyrus instantly trotted into the heated shelter, turned around twice, and laid his heavy head across the entrance, looking out over the blue expanse of Lake Michigan with complete, peaceful contentment.

Julian walked down the terrace steps, stopping beside Maisie.

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out an official blue leather folder, handing it to Leo.

"What's this?" Leo asked, opening the document.

"It is the final legal decree from the Cook County Family Court," Julian explained, his voice softer than Leo had ever heard it. "Full legal guardianship of Maisie remains with you, Leo. The trust fund containing the million dollars has been transferred to a private bank in Zurich, completely tax-free, released to her when she turns twenty-one."

Leo looked up, tears welling in his eyes. "Mr. Hart... I don't know what to say. You saved our lives."

"No, Leo," Julian said, his light eyes turning toward the blind child sitting beside the giant dog in the cedar house. "Your sister saved mine."
