Chapter 5 - The Weight of Justice

The sun was beginning to dip below the tree line of Lake Forest by the time the flashing red and blue lights of the Chicago Police Department cruisers illuminated the iron gates of the Moretti estate.

Detective Owen Price stepped out of an unmarked sedan, adjusting his trench coat against the brisk evening breeze, looking considerably less smug than he had during his previous visit.

He watched as two uniformed officers escorted Celeste Vaughn—now wearing steel handcuffs instead of ivory cashmere—out of the front entrance and into the back of a squad car. Celeste kept her face covered with her hair, refusing to look at the cameras of the local news reporters who had somehow already caught wind of the scandal shaking the Moretti syndicate.

Adrian stood on the grand front steps, his hands shoved into the pockets of his trousers, watching the squad car pull away down the driveway.

Hannah walked out behind him, holding Noah’s small hand. The little boy was clutching a new wooden block tower he had built in the kitchen, completely oblivious to the media circus forming outside the gates.

Detective Price walked up the stone steps, stopping in front of Adrian.

“Well, Mr. Moretti,” Price said, his voice dry. “I have to hand it to you. You certainly know how to keep things interesting in Lake Forest. We processed the scene in the sub-basement. Found the forged affidavits, the security override logs, and a signed confession on Celeste’s personal tablet in the east sitting room outlining her plan to systematically incapacitate Vivian Moretti and seize majority voting shares in Moretti Logistics.”

“Is Vivian going to be discharged from the hospital soon?” Adrian asked, ignoring the detective’s sarcasm.

“Doctors say she’ll be back home by the end of the month,” Price nodded, glancing briefly at Hannah. “Though she’ll need physical therapy for her hip. She asked me to pass along a message to you, Miss Reed.”

Hannah blinked in surprise. “To me?”

“She said: ‘Thank you for having more backbone than the entire Chicago police department combined.’” Price gave a dry, humorless chuckle. “Classy lady, your former boss’s sister.”

With a final nod, Detective Price turned and walked back down to his vehicle, leaving Adrian, Hannah, and Noah standing alone on the grand porch.

The silence that settled over the estate was different this time. It wasn't the heavy, suffocating silence of secrets and fear. It was the quiet, peaceful stillness of a storm that had finally passed, leaving the air clean and crisp.

Adrian turned around, looking down at his son, and then up at Hannah.

“You saved my family twice today, Hannah,” Adrian said quietly, his dark eyes holding hers with a depth of emotion that made her breath catch. “First by protecting my son, and then by refusing to let me make the biggest mistake of my life.”

“I just did what needed to be done, Mr. Moretti,” Hannah replied softly, looking away from his intense gaze.

“Stop calling me that,” Adrian said gently, stepping closer.

Hannah looked up, surprised. “What?”

“My name is Adrian,” he said, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his lips. “And if you ever call me ‘Mr. Moretti’ again after everything we’ve been through today, I’m going to personally demote you to washing the third-floor windows with a toothbrush.”

Hannah couldn't help it—she laughed. It was a bright, genuine sound that seemed to chase away the last lingering shadows of the morning.

Noah tugged on Adrian’s trouser leg. “Daddy, does this mean Miss Hannah is staying forever?”

Adrian looked down at his son, and then reached out, his hand gently covering Hannah’s fingers where she held Noah’s other hand.

“Forever is a long time, buddy,” Adrian said softly, his eyes fixed on Hannah with a warmth that promised a very different future for the Moretti estate. “But as long as she’s willing to put up with us... I think she’s staying right here.”

Hannah looked down at their joined hands, then up at the darkening evening sky over Lake Forest. For the first time in two years, she wasn't just an employee hiding in the shadows of a powerful man's world.
