Chapter 6 - The Shadow in the Organization

The penthouse went on immediate red alert.

Within five minutes, Marco and four heavily armed guards entered the private residential elevator, locking down the floor.

Adrian stood in his private study, standing before a wall of security monitors displaying high-definition feeds of the building’s perimeter, lobby, and underground parking garage.

Nia stood beside him, her face serious. "Who is it, Adrian? Who betrayed you?"

Adrian pressed a button on the control console. A photo appeared on the central monitor: a forty-five-year-old man in an expensive Italian suit, with slicked-back hair and a thin mustache.

"Julian Vance," Adrian said, his voice dripping with venom. "My chief financial officer. He's been with Moretti Global... with my firm... for eight years. I trusted him with my offshore accounts and perimeter logistics."

"Why would he turn on you?"

"Moretti offered him twenty percent of my shipping routes in Europe," Adrian explained coldly. "Julian thought that after the Greenwich attack, I would be distracted, vulnerable... broken."

"So what happens now?"

"Now," Adrian said, pulling a second encrypted phone from his pocket, "I stop playing defense."

He dialed a number. "Marcus. Execute Contingency Omicron. Freeze all Vance's accounts. Notify our contacts in the state police that Vance's private ledger—the one containing his offshore tax fraud—has just been anonymously uploaded to the federal prosecutor's portal."

Nia looked at Adrian in awe. "You had evidence against him all along?"

"I keep leverage on everyone, Nia," Adrian admitted, looking at her. "It's how I survive in this world."

"Except me," Nia noted softly.

Adrian looked at her, his expression softening instantly. "You're the only person in my life I don't need leverage on. Because you are the only person who came into this house without wanting anything from me except a chance to save her sister."

Before Nia could respond, the elevator bell chimed softly.

Marco walked into the study, holding a secure tablet. "Boss, Vance was picked up by state troopers three minutes ago on the Interstate. He was trying to reach the private airfield in New Jersey."

Adrian nodded once. "And the Moretti threat?"

"Their leadership heard about Vance's arrest and the federal freeze," Marco grinned wolfishly. "They've pulled all their men back to Chicago. The war is over, boss. You won."

Adrian let out a long, slow breath. The tension that had held his shoulders rigid for weeks finally melted away. He looked at Marco. "Good work. Double the guards' bonuses for this month."

"Thank you, boss," Marco bowed his head slightly and stepped out of the study, leaving Adrian and Nia alone once more.

Adrian turned to Nia. The danger was gone. The threat to his empire had been neutralized.

And yet, as he looked at her, he realized that the greatest challenge of his life was standing right in front of him.

"Nia," Adrian said gently, taking a step toward her. "The Greenwich house is completely repaired. The security grid has been overhauled. We can go back tomorrow."

"That's good news," Nia smiled, though a slight tinge of sadness touched her eyes. "The boys miss the yard."

"And you?" Adrian asked, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "What do you want, Nia? Your sister is fully recovered. Her medical bills are paid in full. You have fulfilled your contract."

Nia felt her breath hitch in her throat. The realization hit her like a physical force: she was free to leave. She had her money. Maya was healthy. She could go back to Chicago, open her own child psychology practice, and live a quiet, safe life far away from crime bosses, bodyguards, and security alarms.

And yet... the thought of walking away from Adrian, Evan, Caleb, Noah, and Luke felt like tearing her own heart out of her chest.

"I..." Nia stammered softly, looking down at her hands. "I haven't thought about leaving."

May you like

Adrian stepped closer, reaching out to take both of her hands in his. His grip was strong, warm, and desperate.

"Then don't," Adrian pleaded softly, his voice rough with emotion. "Don't leave us, Nia. Don't leave me."
