Chapter 3 - The Wall of Authority

The room suspended itself in a razor-sharp silence.

Greg stood beside Sterling, smoothing down his khakis, a smug, cruel smirk returning to his lips the moment he saw the flash drives resting on the gurney sheet.

“I told you, Victor,” Greg said, his voice dripping with false distress. “This rogue surgeon is harassing my family and violating my stepdaughter’s rights. He cut her medical footwear without consent!”

Victor Sterling stepped into the room, his shining wingtip shoes clicking against the linoleum. He didn't look at Lily’s broken, exposed radius. He didn't look at the infected scars on her small legs. His eyes went directly to the two plastic-wrapped flash drives lying near her knee.

“Dr. Vance,” Sterling said, his tone dropping into a low, threatening register. “You are out of your depth. Mr. Vance—sorry, Mr. Miller—is a major donor to this hospital’s foundation. This is a private family matter involving a child with documented behavioral issues. Hand over those items and step away from the gurney.”

I stood up slowly to my full height, towering over the hospital attorney. I stepped directly between Sterling and Lily, my body forming an impenetrable shield.

“She has an compound radius fracture, signs of severe, prolonged physical torture, and evidence of human trafficking written on her skin, Victor,” I said, my voice echoing off the tiled walls like a thunderclap. “If you take one step closer to this bed, I will personally break your jaw and answer for it in court later.”

Sterling’s eyes narrowed into slits. “You are suspended, Marcus. Effective this second. Chloe, Sarah—leave the room.”

Chloe looked at me, her face pale, then looked at Sterling. “No.”

Sterling blinked, stunned. “What did you say, resident?”

“I said no!” Chloe shouted, her voice shaking with adrenaline as she grabbed a sterile drape and stepped in front of Lily’s legs. “I took an oath! This child is a victim of a crime! I’m not touching anything until the police get here!”

“Security!” Sterling yelled toward the hallway.

Three more hospital security guards rushed through the doors. But before Sterling could give the order to clear the room, a loud, clear voice cut through the chaos from the doorway.

“Nobody moves an inch.”

A tall, sharp-eyed woman in a wet trench coat stepped into the bay, holding a gold police badge high in her left hand. Detective Karen Thomas from Chicago PD Special Victims Division had arrived. Beside her walked two armed city officers.

“Detective Thomas,” I said, letting out a sharp breath. “Thank God.”

“What is the meaning of this?!” Sterling demanded, pulling out his expensive smartphone. “I am calling the Chief of Police! You have no warrant!”

Detective Thomas didn't even look at Sterling. She walked straight past him, her eyes locking onto the flash drives on the bed, then down to Lily’s ink-covered, scarred legs. Her professional mask slipped for a fraction of a second, her jaw tightening until a muscle leaped in her cheek.

“Holy hell...” Thomas breathed softly.

She turned around slowly, looking directly at Greg. “Greg Miller, you are under arrest for aggravated child abuse, endangerment, and suspected human trafficking.”

“This is a mistake!” Greg shrieked as the two officers grabbed his arms, shoving him face-first against the tiled wall. “She fell from a jungle gym! Victor, do something!”

Sterling backed toward the door, his face rapidly draining of color as he realized the situation had escalated beyond his control. “I... I have no personal connection to Mr. Miller’s private affairs,” Sterling stuttered, trying to wash his hands of the man he had entered the room to protect. “I was merely responding to a administrator complaint—”

“Save it for the grand jury, Sterling,” Thomas snapped as the officers clicked steel handcuffs around Greg’s wrists.

As they dragged Greg out into the hallway, screaming threats about his lawyers, Lily let out a soft, whimpering cry.

I immediately turned back to her, taking her small, uninjured hand in mine. “He’s gone, Lily. He’s never coming back.”

She looked up at me, her eyes filling with fresh tears. “My mommy... is my mommy dead?”
