Chapter 6 - The Broken Cage

The room inside was a windowless storage closet converted into a makeshift cell.

A frail, pale woman lay curled on a thin mattress on the floor, wrapped in a threadbare blanket. Her hair was matted, her face hollowed out by severe malnutrition, her lips dry and cracked. A weak plastic flashlight sat on the floor near her hand.

I dropped my trauma bag and immediately dropped to my knees beside her.

“Claire,” I said gently, placing two fingers against her neck to feel her pulse. It was rapid, faint, and thready. She was severely dehydrated and suffering from advanced hypothermia. “I’m Dr. Marcus Vance from St. Jude’s. You’re safe now. The police are here.”

Claire opened her dark, sunken eyes, looking up at me with terrifying desperation. She grabbed the sleeve of my jacket with weak, trembling fingers.

“Lily...” she croaked out, tears cutting clean tracks through the dust on her cheeks. “Where is my baby... where is my little girl...?”

“Lily is safe,” I assured her immediately, wrapping a warm wool emergency blanket around her shoulders. “She’s at the hospital right now. I operated on her arm hours ago. She’s safe, Claire. Greg is in police custody.”

Claire let out a ragged, shattering sob, collapsing against my chest. I held her gently, keeping her warm while I opened an IV bag from my kit and inserted a line into her arm to begin hydration.

Detective Thomas appeared in the doorway, her gun lowered, her face filled with profound relief as she took in the scene.

“Get an ambulance up here now!” Thomas yelled down the hallway to her officers.

“He... he locked me in here three weeks ago...” Claire whispered, her voice cracking as I helped her sip small amounts of water from a plastic bottle. “When I found out what he was doing... when I found the drives... he told me if I made a sound, he would break Lily’s legs...”

I felt an icy, black rage boil beneath my skin, but I kept my voice perfectly calm for Claire. “He can never hurt either of you again, Claire. I promise you.”

“He had help...” Claire gasped out, clutching my hand tightly. “It wasn't just him, Dr. Vance... Greg was taking orders from someone higher up... someone inside the city government... they knew the police were coming tonight... Greg received a phone call right before he left with Lily today...”

“A phone call from who?” Thomas stepped closer, pulling out her notepad.

Claire looked up at Thomas, her eyes wide with terror. “He called him 'The Judge'. He said 'The Judge' was going to ensure the hospital legal team destroyed the evidence before the state could see it.”

Thomas looked at me, her expression turning deadly serious. “Judge Richard Hayes. He’s the head of the County Judicial Oversight Committee—and Victor Sterling’s brother-in-law.”

The web wasn't just a local abuse case. It was a massive, high-level protection ring extending from St. Jude’s legal department straight into the county court system.

And they were currently trying to wipe the evidence clean.
