Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By dawn the following morning, Audrey had not slept a single minute.

She sat on the edge of the thin mattress, cradling Micah against her chest. She had managed to bathe him in the adjoining bathroom using warm water and a washcloth, gently washing away months of grime. She had dressed him in a soft blue sweater she brought in her handbag, feeding him tiny bites of an apple she had saved from her flight.

Micah had eaten greedily, swallowing food as if he expected it to be ripped away from him at any second.

At 7:00 AM, the bedroom door opened.

Sabrina Cole walked in, wearing a silk robe and holding a steaming mug of coffee. She looked around the room with an expression of supreme disgust.

"You're still in here?" Sabrina sneered, leaning against the doorframe. "Graham told me you were staying. Frankly, Audrey, it's pathetic. If I were you, I'd pack my bags and leave what's left of your dignity behind."

Audrey slowly stood up, placing Micah behind her. She looked Sabrina up and down—the expensive diamond necklace around her neck, the designer silk robe, the pristine manicure. All bought with company funds Audrey had audited just three months ago.

"You were a junior marketing assistant earning sixty thousand a year when I left for Seattle, Sabrina," Audrey said flatly. "Where did you get the diamond necklace?"

Sabrina raised her chin proudly. "Graham loves me. He gives me whatever I want. Keller Northstar is thriving thanks to the expansion we managed."

"You didn't manage anything," Audrey replied, taking a step toward her. "You sat in Westchester while I worked eighty hours a week negotiating maritime shipping rights. And while I was working, you crept into my house, moved into my bedroom, and abused my son."

Sabrina’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but she quickly recovered her composure. "Micah is defective, Audrey. Even Lorraine says so. Theo is the future of the Keller family. Today at the luncheon, Graham is officially announcing Theo as his heir and presenting him to the board members."

"Is that so?" Audrey murmured.

"Yes," Sabrina gloated. "So stay up here with your floor crawler. Don't embarrass Graham in front of the mayor and the corporate investors."

Sabrina turned on her heel and walked away, her high heels clicking loudly down the hallway.

Audrey pulled out her phone. A secure notification flashed across the screen.

Harrison: The audit team has breached the secondary servers. We found three offshore shell companies registered under Lorraine Keller and Sabrina Cole. Over fourteen million dollars has been embezzled from the Seattle expansion account over the last eighteen months.

Audrey replied instantly: Hold the evidence until 1:00 PM. I want them to make their public announcement first.

At 11:00 AM, the mansion came alive with activity. Caterers moved through the ground floor, setting up floral arrangements and silver serving trays. The driveway filled with luxury sedans as local politicians, board members, and high-society figures arrived for Graham’s grand victory luncheon.

Audrey dressed herself in a sharp, immaculate navy-blue tailored skirt suit—the uniform of a woman ready for war. She combed Micah’s hair, gently holding his small hand.

"Micah," she whispered, looking into his quiet eyes. "Today, Mommy is going to take you home. Real home."

The boy didn't speak, but he squeezed her finger tightly.

Downstairs, the grand ballroom was filled with over fifty influential guests.

Lorraine Keller stood near the podium, dressed in an emerald green gown, holding court among the city’s elite. Beside her, Graham looked pristine, holding a glass of champagne, while Sabrina stood by his side like a glowing hostess. Five-year-old Theo was seated on a velvet chair near the front, dressed in a miniature tuxedo, receiving praises and gifts from guests.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" Lorraine’s voice echoed through the microphone, commanding immediate silence across the room. "Thank you for joining us on this glorious day for Keller Northstar!"

The crowd applauded politely.

"As many of you know," Lorraine continued, her voice dripping with artificial grace, "our company has overcome immense hurdles. Today, we celebrate our record-breaking quarterly profits. But more importantly, we celebrate the future of the Keller legacy. My son, Graham, has proven himself a true leader. And today, we honor his family—his true family."

She pointed toward Theo, who bowed dramatically to the crowd's applause.

"A family built on strength, pride, and perfection!" Lorraine declared. "Unlike those who abandon their duties, we honor the ones who stay and build!"

Graham stepped up to the podium, taking the microphone from his mother. He raised his glass. "To the future of Keller Northstar, and to my son, Theo—"

"You forgot one child, Graham," a cold, crystal-clear voice rang out from the back of the room.

The heavy mahogany doors of the ballroom swung wide open.
