Chapter 8 - The Price of Treachery

Six months later.

The trial of Graham Keller, Lorraine Keller, and Sabrina Cole concluded at the Westchester County Criminal Courthouse.

The prosecution’s case had been airtight. Supported by forensic financial audits, medical reports, security footage, and Sabrina’s detailed confession, the jury reached a unanimous verdict in less than two hours.

Graham Keller was convicted of felony child abuse, criminal child endangerment, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit fraud. He was sentenced to twenty-two years in state prison without the possibility of parole for fifteen years.

Lorraine Keller, found to be the mastermind behind the systematic abuse and financial fraud, was sentenced to twenty-eight years in a maximum-security women's facility. Given her advanced age and failing health, it was effectively a life sentence.

Sabrina Cole received eight years for her role in the financial fraud and child neglect, while her son Theo was placed in the legal custody of his biological father’s family in Connecticut, far away from the toxic influence of the Kellers.

On the day Graham was transferred to the Sing Sing Correctional Facility, he was permitted one final legal meeting in the visitor room.

He sat behind the thick plastic partition, wearing handcuffs and a dingy prison uniform.

The door opened, and Audrey stepped into the room.

Graham’s face lit up with a desperate, pathetic glimmer of hope. He picked up the telephone on the wall as Audrey sat down across from him, picking up her receiver.

"Audrey!" Graham sobbed into the phone, pressing his face against the glass. "Thank God you came! Please... you have to help me appeal! The sentence is too harsh! I won't survive twenty years in here!"

Audrey looked at him through the glass. She felt no anger, no hatred, and no bitterness. Looking at the broken, hollow man across from her, she felt only a quiet, absolute coldness.

"I didn't come to help you, Graham," Audrey said, her voice completely steady. "I came to deliver the final court documents."

She held up a document against the glass partition.

"This is the official decree changing Micah’s last name," Audrey stated flatly. "He is no longer a Keller. His name is Micah Vance, taking my mother’s maiden name. Every legal tie between you and my son has been permanently severed."

Graham stared at the paper, his body shaking violently as reality crashed down upon him. "You... you erased my name?"

"You erased yourself the day you let him crawl on the floor, Graham," Audrey said softly. "You have no son. You have no home. You have no company. Everything you tried to steal from me has been returned to the child you tried to destroy."

Audrey set the telephone receiver back on its hook.

She stood up, smoothed down her suit jacket, and walked toward the exit door without looking back once.

Behind the glass, Graham slammed his hands against the partition, screaming her name in silent, hopeless despair as the guards dragged him away into the dark corridors of the prison.
