Chapter 1: The Dark History of Luke Vance

"...the man the state police have been looking for since 2022," Davis whispered, his voice vibrating with a terrifying urgency. "His real name isn't Luke. It's Lucas Vance. Four years ago, in Oregon, he was investigated for severe child abuse and reckless endangerment of his first wife's son. He jumped bail, changed his identity, and vanished. Ma'am, he is an absolute monster. You need to step away from him right now."

The words hit me like a physical blow. The room spun around me. Lucas Vance. The man I had shared a bed with for three years, the man who had tucked my daughter into bed and whom she called "Daddy," was a fugitive child abuser.

"What are you two whispering about over there?" Luke's voice boomed from the kitchen doorway, breaking the spell. The casual, relaxed demeanor he had displayed minutes ago was completely gone. His eyes were darting between Davis and me, his body language tense and coiled like a spring. He had noticed Davis's badge, and he knew his cover was blown.

"Nothing, sir," Davis said, instantly shifting back into his professional paramedic persona, though his hand covertly drifted toward the emergency radio on his shoulder. "We just need the mother to sign the authorization forms for transport. The child needs to go to General Hospital immediately."

"She’s not going anywhere," Luke said, stepping out of the kitchen. He wasn't smiling anymore. A dark, terrifying malice radiated from him. "We don't need your hospital. I told you, she’s just being dramatic. Elena, tell them to leave. Now."

"No, Luke," I said, my voice shaking but filled with a sudden, fierce maternal instinct. I stepped between him and the couch where Addie lay clutching her oxygen mask. "She is going to the hospital. And you are never going to touch her again."

Luke’s face twisted into an ugly, furious scowl. "You ungrateful b—"

Before he could finish his sentence, Davis raised his radio. "Dispatch, this is Medic 4. We have a Code 10-33 at our current location. Suspect matches the description of fugitive Lucas Vance. Requesting immediate police backup."

Luke didn't hesitate. Realizing the police were on their way, he lunged forward, grabbing his car keys from the counter. He didn't try to attack us; his only goal was escape. He slammed his heavy coffee mug onto the floor, shattering it into a hundred sharp ceramic pieces, and sprinted out the back door into the dark, rainy night.

"Don't follow him!" Davis yelled, holding my arm as I instinctively moved forward. "My partner has Addie. We are moving her to the ambulance right now. The police will handle him. Your daughter is your priority."

As they loaded Addie’s stretcher into the back of the flashing emergency vehicle, I looked back at my house. The lights were on, the purple-marker drawing was still taped to the wall, but my life had completely shattered. The nightmare had begun, and my only focus was keeping my little girl alive.
