Chapter 6: A Breath of Pure Air

Two years later.
The wooden deck of our coastal cottage was decorated with fairy lights and blooming white hydrangeas. The sound of the Atlantic ocean waves crashing gently against the shore provided a beautiful natural melody for the gathering of friends and neighbors.
I stood in front of the long mirror in my bedroom, adjusting the straps of a simple, elegant white linen sundress. My hair was styled in soft waves, and my skin was sun-kissed and radiant. I looked happy. Truly, deeply happy.
The door opened, and Addie bounced into the room. She was seven years old now, wearing a beautiful flower-girl dress, her purple marker drawing from two years ago carefully preserved in a beautiful silver frame on my nightstand.
"Mommy! Everyone is waiting outside! Davis looks super handsome in his suit!" she giggled, holding a basket of pink rose petals.
"Are you ready, sweetie?" I asked, kneeling down to look into her bright, healthy eyes. She hadn't used her rescue inhaler in over a year. Her lungs were completely healed, and her heart was full of joy.
"Ready!" she cheered, grabbing my hand.
We walked out onto the sun-drenched deck together. Standing at the end of the aisle, next to a local minister, was Davis. He looked incredibly handsome in a light gray suit, his eyes locked onto me with a devotion so pure it took my breath away.
Detective Marcus was there too, sitting in the front row, smiling proudly like a protective older brother.
As Davis and I exchanged our vows under the open, beautiful blue sky, promising to honor, cherish, and build a life of safety and love together, I took a deep, slow breath of the crisp sea air.
"I promise to always be your shield, Elena," Davis said, slipping a simple diamond band onto my finger. "And I promise to always make sure our home is a place where you both can breathe easy."
The minister smiled. "I now pronounce you husband and wife."
Davis pulled me close, sealing our marriage with a passionate, loving kiss as our guests erupted into thunderous applause. Addie threw her rose petals into the air, laughing as she ran to join our embrace.

Davis picked her up in his strong arms, holding both of us tightly against his chest. The nightmare of the past was completely gone, buried deep beneath the ocean waves. The lesson we had actually learned wasn't one of fear or control—it was a lesson of survival, resilience, and the ultimate power of a mother's love.
We had finally found our safe haven, and for the first time in my life, every single breath felt absolutely perfect.
