Chapter 10 - The Peace We Built

Three years later.

The summer sun was setting in brilliant hues of orange, gold, and pink over the calm waters of the Hudson River.

The sanctuary had grown into one of the premiere veteran support centers on the East Coast, having helped over five hundred military families transition safely back into civilian life.

In the backyard of our private home on the edge of the estate, a long wooden dining table was set under a canopy of glowing string lights and blooming white jasmine.

My father-in-law, Sophia’s father, Marcus—a kind, hardworking retired mechanic who had moved onto the property to help manage the grounds—sat at the head of the table, laughing as he showed four-year-old Leo how to assemble a small wooden model airplane.

Beside them, Sophia sat on a wooden bench, holding our newborn daughter, Evelyn—named not after my mother, but after my maternal grandmother, who had been a nurse in World War II.

I walked out from the kitchen carrying a large platter of grilled steak and summer vegetables, setting it in the center of the table.

Leo jumped up from his chair, holding his wooden plane high in the air. "Daddy! Look! Grandpa helped me fix the wings!"

"That's incredible, chief," I smiled, sweeping Leo up in my arms and tossing him gently into the air, making him giggle with pure, unburdened delight. "Fly it over to the table."

Sophia looked up at me, her eyes shining with warmth, love, and absolute contentment. The shadows of fear, abuse, and pain that had once haunted her eyes were completely gone, replaced by an enduring radiance.

I sat down beside my wife, placing my arm around her shoulders, holding her close against my side as my daughter slept peacefully in her arms.

There were no military guards needed here. There were no hidden cameras, no locked doors, no cruel whispers, and no fight left to wage.

I looked around the table at the family we had fought so hard to protect—a family built not on fear, status, or stolen money, but on loyalty, truth, and unshakeable love.

"Are you happy, Lucas?" Sophia whispered, resting her head against my shoulder as the evening breeze rustled the leaves above us.

I looked at my wife, my son, and my daughter under the warm, glowing lights of the home that was truly ours.

"I'm home, Sophia," I answered softly, kissing her lips under the starlit sky. "I'm finally home."
