Chapter 5 - The General's Intervention

The press conference held at the Grand Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was standing-room only.

Eleanor's legal team had invited dozens of high-society journalists, expecting to control the narrative and paint me as an unhinged, shell-shocked veteran who had unlawfully imprisoned his honorable mother.

Harrison Vance sat near the podium, wearing a dark suit, trying to project an air of dignified victimhood. Beside him stood Arthur Vance Sr., adjusting his microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Arthur began, pulling his papers together. "We are here today to expose a tragic miscarriage of justice. Major Lucas Vance, suffering from combat-induced paranoia, has unlawfully used military personnel to remove his mother from her ancestral home—"

"That is a lie, Mr. Vance," a booming voice echoed from the back of the auditorium.

The room swept around in unison. Flashbulbs exploded like lightning.

Walking down the center aisle was General Robert Sterling, a four-star commander wearing his full dress blues, accompanied by two armed Army JAG officers and a civilian federal prosecutor.

Behind them walked Sophia and me. I held my wife’s hand firmly in mine. She wore an elegant navy dress, her posture proud and dignified, her face clear and calm.

Harrison jumped up from his chair, his eyes wide with horror. "General Sterling?!"

General Sterling walked straight up to the podium, pushing Arthur Vance Sr. aside with a single, firm movement. He looked out at the sea of news cameras with the authority of a man who commanded fifty thousand troops.

"I am General Robert Sterling, Commander of the United States Army Special Operations Division," the General declared, his voice carrying through the room without the need for a microphone. "For the past eight months, Major Lucas Vance served under my direct command in high-risk operational environments. He executed his duties with absolute honor, flawless judgment, and heroic distinction."

The reporters scribbled frantically in their notebooks, cameras flashing continuously.

"Two months ago," General Sterling continued, pulling an official military dossier from his coat, "Major Vance brought evidence to my attention regarding a systemic campaign of extortion, domestic abuse, and financial fraud targeting his family while he was fighting for this country."

General Sterling turned his head slowly, glaring at Harrison Vance with utter disgust.

"An official United States Military Investigation, conducted in coordination with the FBI and Child Protective Services, has concluded that Eleanor Vance and Audrey Vance systematically abused Sophia Vance and endangered the life of an infant child," General Sterling stated. "The claim that Major Vance is mentally unstable is a malicious fabrication designed to cover up felony criminal behavior."

The auditorium erupted into chaos. Reporters shouted questions at once, pushing forward against the press barriers.

"General Sterling! Is it true that Eleanor Vance stole $2.4 million from a veterans charity?!" a journalist yelled.

"The federal indictment filed this morning contains twenty-four counts of felony grand larceny and wire fraud against Eleanor Vance, Audrey Vance, and Harrison Vance," the federal prosecutor stepped up to clarify. "Asset forfeiture proceedings have begun on all accounts held by the defendants."

Harrison sank back into his chair, covering his face with his hands as press photographers surrounded him, snapping hundreds of photos of his complete humiliation.

I looked down at Sophia. She looked up at me, a soft, beautiful smile touching her lips—the first true smile I had seen on her face since I returned home.

The smear campaign was dead. And Eleanor’s last weapon had just exploded in her face.
