Chapter 3 - The Inheritance of Truth

When I finally woke up, the world was soft, quiet, and blindingly white. I wasn't in a shared trauma bay anymore; I was in a suite that felt more like a five-star hotel. Sun streamed through floor-to-ceiling windows, and the smell of jasmine replaced the sterile rot of the hospital.

I tried to sit up, but my body felt like it had been shredded and stitched back together by a blind tailor.

"Easy," a voice said.

Madeline was sitting in a velvet armchair by the window, a laptop open on her knees. She moved to the bedside with a grace I had never seen in my mother. She helped me adjust the pillows, her movements so gentle I almost cried.

"Where are they?" I croaked, my throat raw.

"Cordelia and Raymond are in custody," Madeline said, closing her laptop. "The evidence my team recovered—the lockbox, the forged documents, the bank statements showing the embezzlement of your own trust funds—it’s insurmountable. They aren't getting out, Elena."

"And Julian?"

Madeline’s face hardened. "He’s in a secure ward. He’s facing felony DUI and attempted vehicular manslaughter. My legal team is ensuring that no 'special circumstances' apply. He will face a jury of his peers."

I looked at my hands. They were bruised, taped, and IV-riddled, but they were mine. "Why now? Why wait twenty-nine years?"

Madeline’s eyes filled with tears—the first time I had seen her break. "Because I didn't know. The clinic where I gave birth… they told me you died. They told me there was a complication, and you were gone. I spent years mourning a ghost. It wasn't until I started looking into the Brooks family for a merger acquisition last month that I saw your photo in the company registry. I saw the eyes. My eyes. I knew."

She reached for a leather-bound file on the nightstand. "I’ve spent the last month verifying everything. I have the DNA results from the morning of the crash. You are my daughter, Elena. And you are the sole heir to the Sterling Estate."

I felt dizzy. "I don't… I don't know who I am, Madeline. I’m an accountant. I’m the girl who buys supermarket gift cards."

"You are a fighter," she corrected. "You survived them for thirty years. You are the strongest person I have ever known."

There was a knock at the door, and a man in a sharp suit entered—her lead attorney, Marcus Thorne.

"Ms. Sterling, the board of directors is requesting a statement regarding the Brooks incident. They are concerned about the optics of the Sterling Estate being linked to a kidnapping case."

Madeline stood, her stature instantly shifting back into the CEO. "Tell them to keep their concerns to themselves. And Marcus? Get me the files on the Brooks' nightclub, The Onyx Lounge. I want to buy it. And then, I want to bulldoze it."

I leaned back against the pillows, the weight of the truth settling into my marrow. I had been an expendable spare part, but now, the people who tried to dismantle me were being systematically disassembled themselves.
