Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

The final chapter wasn't written in a courtroom or an office. It was written on a quiet Sunday morning in the garden of the estate.
I stood on the patio, watching the sunrise hit the river. Madeline was sitting nearby, reading a book.
My life had been a series of subtractions—my parents had subtracted my worth, my brother had subtracted my safety, and the world had subtracted my truth. But now, it was a series of additions. I was adding meaning to my work, I was adding love to my home, and I was adding a legacy that would last long after I was gone.
I looked at my hand. The skin was healed. The scars were fading.
I took a deep breath of the morning air. It tasted like rain, like jasmine, and like the future.
"Elena?" Madeline called out.
"Yes?"
"Are you happy?"
I looked at the horizon, where the light was turning the river into gold. I thought about the supermarket gift cards, the broken phone, and the cold hospital air. Then I thought about the foundation, the Sterling tower, and the woman who had never stopped looking for me.
