Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Siege

The sixteenth floor of the Vale Medical Systems tower was a monument to corporate power. The walls were lined with polished gray quartz, and the massive, oval conference table was made of smoked glass, surrounded by the twelve senior board members of the company.

Celeste sat at the head of the table, looking like a queen in a tailored cream suit, her fingers tapping against a silver fountain pen. Adrian sat to her right, his feet nearly resting on the glass table, his expression one of arrogant, unchecked victory.

Martin Mercer stood at the podium, a large digital projection behind him displaying the transfer protocols for Project Phoenix.

"As the legal representative of the Vale estate," Mercer announced, his voice echoing through the quiet room, "and in accordance with the last will of Graham Vale, I am authorizing the immediate strategic merger between Vale Medical Systems and Helios Pharmaceuticals. This merger will stabilize our stock price and ensure the long-term viability of our research division."

An older board member, Dr. Aris Thorne, frowned, leaning forward. "Martin, this isn't a merger. This looks like a complete liquidation of our intellectual property. Project Phoenix is our crown jewel. Why are we selling the patents to our direct competitor for less than a quarter of their market valuation?"

"The market is volatile, Dr. Thorne," Celeste interjected, her voice smooth, dripping with artificial concern. "With my late husband’s tragic passing, the company lacks the stability to fund the final phase of clinical trials. Helios has the capital we need. It is what Graham would have wanted."

"That's a lie, Celeste," a clear, cold voice said from the doorway.

The double doors of the boardroom swung open, and I walked into the room. I was no longer wearing the quiet black dress or the utility jacket. I wore a sharp, charcoal-gray power suit, my hair pulled back into a sleek, professional ponytail, my laptop case slung over my shoulder.

Adrian let out a loud, mocking laugh. "Vivienne? Who let you in here? Security, get this girl out of here. She doesn't have a seat at this table."

"Actually, Adrian, I own the table," I said, walking straight to the empty seat opposite Celeste and setting my laptop down on the smoked glass.

Mercer’s face went slightly pale, his eyes darting toward the security guards standing by the door. "Vivienne, this is a private executive session. Your allowance does not grant you voting privileges or access to strategic meetings."

"I'm not here as a beneficiary, Martin," I said, opening my laptop and connecting it directly to the boardroom’s main projection screen with a single cable. "I'm here as the Independent Protector of the Vale Family Trust."

The screen behind Mercer flashed, wiping out the Helios merger presentation. In its place appeared a massive, high-definition display of the original will I had pulled from Mercer’s safe six hours ago, alongside the signed, corrupt contract between Mercer, Celeste, and Helios Pharmaceuticals.

The board members gasped, several of them standing up to get a closer look at the screen.

"What is the meaning of this?" Dr. Thorne demanded, his eyes wide as he read the Helios contract details. "Sixty million dollars paid directly to a shell company owned by Celeste Vale? This is fraud!"

"It’s a fabrication!" Celeste screamed, her composure finally breaking, her face contorting into a mask of pure fury. "She’s a disgruntled child who didn't get what she wanted in the will! Security, remove her now!"

The two security guards stepped forward, their hands moving toward their belts.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you," I said calmly.

Before the guards could touch me, the heavy side doors of the boardroom were thrown open, and Detective Mara Quinn stepped into the room, followed by six uniformed police officers and two federal investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

"Martin Mercer, Celeste Vale, Adrian Vale," Quinn said, her voice cutting through the panic like an executioner’s axe. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, grand larceny, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit murder."
