Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Machine

The boardroom descended into absolute chaos. Adrian pulled his feet off the table, his face turning an unearthly shade of gray as a uniformed officer clamped handcuffs around his wrists, his father’s vintage watch catching the harsh fluorescent lights.
"Mom! Do something!" Adrian shrieked, struggling against the officer’s grip. "They can't do this! We own this place!"
Celeste stood perfectly rigid, her eyes fixed on me with a hatred so pure it could have burned through the glass table between us. "You think you’ve won, Vivienne? You think a few scanned documents will hold up in a court of law against our legal team? The Vale trust infrastructure is locked. Without my signature, the company’s liquidity remains frozen. You’ll bankrupt the firm trying to fight me."
"The infrastructure isn't locked, Celeste," I said, leaning forward, my hands resting flat on the table. "And we don't need your signature."
I turned back to my laptop, typing in a final command string. The projection screen changed once more, leaving the legal documents behind and opening a live, high-definition video feed from a secure, private medical facility downtown.
The camera focused on a large, leather armchair sitting in front of a window overlooking the city skyline.
The chair turned slowly.
Sitting in the chair, wearing a tailored black suit, his face clear of the oxygen tubes, his eyes burning with a terrifying, absolute authority, was Graham Vale.
Celeste staggered back, her knees hitting her chair, her mouth opening in a silent, horrified scream. Martin Mercer dropped his silver fountain pen, the metal clinking against the glass table like a death knell.
"Hello, Celeste," my father said through the audio link, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that filled the boardroom with the weight of a ghost returned to claim his kingdom. "You always did prefer the cheap tonic. But you should have checked the undertaker’s logs before you started redecorating my office."
"Graham..." Celeste whispered, her hands shaking so violently she had to grip the edge of the table to remain standing. "It’s... it’s impossible. I saw... I saw the telemetry. Your heart stopped."
"My heart stopped for exactly four minutes, thanks to the digitalis you put in my glass," my father said, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of gray ice. "But Nurse Elena is a very efficient medical professional, and Detective Quinn knows how to manage a crime scene. The coffin you buried yesterday contained eighty pounds of industrial playground sand, Celeste. I hope you enjoyed the flowers."
My father looked past her, his gaze fixing on the board members who stood frozen around the table. "Gentlemen, as the living, breathing Chairman of the Board of Vale Medical Systems, I am officially terminating Martin Mercer as corporate counsel, stripping Celeste and Adrian Vale of all proxy rights, and appointing my daughter, Vivienne Vale, as the sole Chief Executive Officer of this company, effective immediately."
Dr. Thorne was the first to react. He looked at me, then at the projection of my father, and raised his hand. "All in favor of the Chairman's resolution?"
May you like
Eleven hands flew into the air without a single second of hesitation.
"The motion carries," I said, looking directly into Celeste’s broken, pale face as Detective Quinn led her away in handcuffs. "Take them out of my boardroom."
