Chapter 4 - The Arrest in the Night

I returned to the hospital at 12:45 a.m.

I sat in the dark corner of Gracie’s room, watching the steady, rhythmic rise and fall of her chest as she slept peacefully under the influence of her pain medication.

At 1:15 a.m., my phone vibrated in my hand. It was a video message sent from Detective Cole’s official police mobile line.

I attached my headphones and pressed play.

The bodycam video showed three Oakhill patrol cars parked in front of my house across the street, their red and blue lights flashing against the quiet suburban trees.

Detective Cole and two uniformed officers walked up the front steps and knocked heavily on the front door.

A moment later, Carolina opened the door wearing a silk bathrobe, holding a glass of wine. Her face instantly transformed from arrogant annoyance into visible shock.

"What is the meaning of this?" Carolina demanded loudly, standing in the doorway. "Do you know what time it is? My husband has illegally taken my daughter, and I demand you go find him!"

"Carolina Owens?" Detective Cole stated flatly, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for Felony Child Endangerment, Aggravated Assault on a Minor, and Intimidation of a Victim."

Carolina’s face drained of all color. "What?! Are you insane?! I am her mother! He's lying to you! Whatever he told you is a lie!"

"We didn't talk to him, Mrs. Owens," Detective Cole informed her calmly as the two officers stepped forward, grabbed her arms, and turned her around. "We watched the 4K video recording from Mrs. Kennedy’s roof camera. We saw you push your eight-year-old daughter into the doorframe, and we heard you threaten her."

Carolina froze. The wine glass slipped from her hand, shattering into a hundred pieces on the entryway tile.

"No... no, wait!" Carolina panicked, her voice rising into a sharp, hysterical shriek as the handcuffs clicked tightly over her wrists. "You can't do this to me! Do you know who my family is?! My mother will destroy you! Sawyer! SAWYER!"

The officers escorted her down the porch steps, past the driveway where my suitcase still sat near the door, and placed her into the back of the patrol vehicle.

I turned off my phone, took off the headphones, and looked over at Gracie sleeping in the bed.

For the first time in five days, I let out a long, trembling breath.

The woman who had terrorized my daughter was behind bars. But as I looked toward the morning sun beginning to peak through the hospital window, I knew the battle was far from over.
