Chapter 10 - The Promise in the Sun

Two years later.
The lake cottage outside town had become our favorite weekend retreat.
It was a brilliant mid-summer morning. The water of the lake sparkled like diamonds under the clear blue Ohio sky.
Gracie sat on the edge of the wooden dock, dangling her feet into the cool water, wearing a bright yellow life vest. Beside her sat Barnaby—a golden retriever puppy we had adopted for her ninth birthday—who was barking happily at the small waves lapping against the posts.
I walked down the lawn carrying two fishing rods and a tackle box.
I sat down on the dock beside her, casting a line out into the quiet water.
"Dad?" Gracie asked, looking up at me with her bright brown eyes.
"Yeah, Gracie?"
"Do you remember when you came home from Cleveland three years ago?" she asked softly.
My heart held its breath for a second, but when I looked at her face, there was no fear, no sadness—only a deep, quiet wonder.
"I remember every second of it, sweetie," I said, putting my hand over hers.
"I was so scared," Gracie admitted, watching the float bob on the water. "I thought if I told you, I would lose you. But you didn't yell. You just held me and took me away."
"I will always take you away from the dark, Gracie," I promised her, kissing the top of her head. "No matter where I am, no matter how far I have to travel, the second you need me, I will always come home."

Gracie leaned her head against my arm, watching the puppy try to bite the water splashes.
"I know, Dad," she smiled happily. "I'm not scared anymore."
