Chapter 4 - Infiltrating the Empire

Before we drove north to Blackwood, I needed to see what Carter was doing to my father's empire. Dennis Logistics had always been built on honor, fair wages, and community trust.
Maya and I parked her sedan across the street from the corporate headquarters—the glittering glass tower my father had built from the ground up. The banner outside no longer read Dennis Logistics. It had been rebranded as Apex Vanguard Holdings.
Through the tinted glass windows of the lobby, I saw Carter stepping out of a private elevator. He was surrounded by men in dark suits, laughing as he lit an expensive cigar. He looked wealthy, but beneath the designer suit, I knew he was drowning. The shipping logs Maya had pulled on the drive showed that under Carter's management, three major shipping routes had been compromised, and the company was taking on massive high-interest loans from offshore lenders.
"He's laundering money for the same syndicates he owed gambling debts to," I murmured, watching him step into his luxury sports car.

"They need your father’s final voting shares to approve the merger with Apex Vanguard," Maya explained, checking her tablet. "Once the merger goes through, the old company is dissolved, the evidence of the original two-million-dollar theft vanishes into corporate restructuring, and you can never clear your name."
"My father gave his life to this company," I said, my knuckles turning white against the dashboard. "And they're using it as a piggy bank for criminals. Let's go get my dad."
