Chapter 6 - The True Camden Dennis

I moved up the rear stairwell, bypassing the main nurses' station. My boots made no sound against the linoleum floor. When I reached the door of Room 204, my hands began to shake.

I pushed the door open.

The room was dim, illuminated only by the faint green glow of a heart monitor. Sitting in a wheelchair by the reinforced glass window was a man who looked like a shadow of the father I remembered. Camden Dennis had always been a mountain of a man, with a booming laugh and broad shoulders. Now, his hair was stark white, his frame thin, his head resting heavily against his chest.

"Dad," I whispered, rushing to his side and dropping to my knees.

His eyelids fluttered open. His eyes were milky, unfocused, clouded by the heavy chemical cocktail running through his IV drip. "Reagan...?" he muttered, his voice a frail, dry rasp. "I told you... I won't sign it..."

"Dad, it's me. It's Finnley. I'm back."

At the sound of my name, something miraculous happened. The fog in his eyes didn't vanish, but a sudden, violent spark of recognition flared deep within them. His hand, thin and trembling, reached out and gripped my jacket with surprising, desperate strength.

"Finnley...?" he gasped, his chest heaving. "You're here... they told me you were transferred to a maximum-security prison... they told me you refused to see me..."

"They lied to both of us, Dad," I said, tears blurring my vision as I pulled the IV line from his arm and threw a heavy blanket around his shoulders. "We’re leaving. Right now."

Suddenly, the red emergency lights in the hallway began to flash, accompanied by a piercing, high-pitched siren.

“Security breach in Sector 2,” an automated voice echoed through the PA system. “All units seal the exits.”

Our twelve minutes were up.
